There are people who have already interviewed. Someone told me that individual departments (at least some of them) do all of their interviews during one week and decide by the end and send it into the central internship application office.
So I’m not applying yet but I was wondering what people would think of my chances based on my info.
I go to a small liberal arts school in NYS. 3.85 GPA in Finance and Analytics. I’m on the student government executive board and oversee some committees. I’m also president of a business school club.
I was head intern for a high ranking Democratic Senator in his/her regional office for a year. I got to know the director there well and he is writing me a rec. As a plus, a former intern in the office I’m in is a pretty high ranking aid to the President.
I’ve also interned for a finance company and venture capital firms around my school. It’s looking pretty good that I could have an internship at Golman Sachs in NYC for finance this coming summer.
I’m in an honor society and have a good amount of community service. Just looking for thoughts. Good luck all!!
If we haven’t been interviewed or contacted in any way, is that a bad sign? Also is the March 9 notification the final notification for acceptances or the date where prospective interviewees are guaranteed to know whether they have gotten an interview? Will we be emailed if we have been rejected during that week?
As far as I know, they start telling people that they have or have not officially been accepted on March 9th. However, due to wait list delays, some might not be notified until later. It could also vary within departments.
Got DR forms today.
DR forms today, no interview yet. Does that mean waitlisted?
@drumwriter22 From what I have read I would say it means nothing at all. Don’t over read into anything. Some people have said they got DR forms first, others interviews first, and some at the same time. It’s not a bad sign but nothing is a yes until you are told “yes”. I know that is not saying much but it seems to be a common answer on this thread. Hope this somewhat helped.
Just some info for people posting here, or for people reading this who don’t have accounts here but keep checking for news… it ain’t a yes until it’s a yes. And when it could feel like a “yes”, it could still end up being a “no”.
The WH internship has wait-listed and rejected MANY people who’ve completed a successful interview and submitted the DR forms in a timely fashion. Being asked to complete them, as it would have been outlined in any e-mail when you received them, does not guarantee that you are anywhere close to being selected. Remember, thousands of VERY qualified individuals apply for this job. Anyone who has the mental stamina to even complete the application process is probably among the brightest young Americans.
To be frank, take March 9th with a grain of salt… expect nothing on that date. Give them time and you’ll give yourself sanity. Some people will find out of their acceptance THE WEEK*** of March 9th, some will know the week earlier. Some could receive rejections long before then. Many people will know where they stand sometime even as late as April.
Wait-listed people could even be accepted THE WEEK OF the start date! It’s happened – selected people sometimes fail drug tests. Some even change their minds in favor of other well-paying jobs or internships. Remember, if you’re being interviewed for the White House, you are among the most qualified people in the nation for MANY other jobs.
You should absolutely be proud to still be in the race, but by all means, do not start bragging to people that you are a finalist and do not start making plans to move to Washington. However, that said, PLEASE BE PROUD OF YOURSELF FOR EVEN WAITING TO HEAR SOMETHING! Even a rejection from the White House is still acknowledgement from the White House. While hundreds of people complete this internship annually, only a handful of Americans have the opportunity to even be considered.
As for qualifications, this is the White House! Do it, give it a shot! The worst that could happen is you get rejected.
They are interested in ALL young Americans to come and intern for them. If you are artistic, creative, and very into film editing, there’s definitely going to be something for you. (Who do you think probably works on those short videos, like the one Obama was in last week where he was like “Thanks, Obama…” over the cookies and milk?)
Theatre students who are interested could boast in their personal essays about the public speaking skills they’ve gained from their years on the stage. If you are interested in reading and writing, almost every department could use you. If you are into politics and history – well, that speaks for itself!
It goes without saying that you should have a good GPA (obviously, a 3.8 is pretty solid) and they love and need leaders. So, if you were president of a committee, a student council, or even directed plays/stage managed during high school or especially college, if you ever started a club, if you managed anything or took on leadership in any way, then you’re the kind of person that has skills that are useful to the Obama Administration.
Never discourage yourself from what could be the biggest blessing… even if you’re rejected, the idea that you aimed for the White House could motivate you to go on to do some great things with your life. Good luck!
If we haven’t received any correspondence from the program since the submission of our application, is that a bad sign? Like no waitlist, DR, interview, no nothing.
I’m in the same boat
just like nightwater said. “Yes” does not mean “yes”. And… nothing does not mean “no”. Its all about the individual departments. Some might not have done interviews yet. Some might be overworked with other more pressing matters. Positive outlook!
Question, what are DR forms and when are they sent? Slash are they sent to everyone or just those who have basically been accepted for the position?
In other words, what is the overall process? I got an interview with a department in early February but no papers of any kind, as far as I know.
I received DR forms, but no interview. DR forms consist of general paperwork and security clearance paperwork.
Again - the process varies. I received an interview in early February, reference checks the following week, and DR forms for a security clearance this week. However, as others stated, I could still very likely get rejected/wait listed.
@silentsailor did you get those forms via email?
The forms came via email for me. I didn’t receive anything through the portal.
@screen8888 Everything over email. DR forms came from the internship office, interview requests came from individual staffers. Haven’t even checked the portal. Whoops?
Anyone else move forward in the process or hear anything?
The calm before the storm.
