White smoke from the Vatican!

Popeyes actually tweeted ā€œPope yesā€ (that’s it, nothing else) the moment there was white smoke. Their social media team was on it, clearly.

The local Chicago area pizza place where he ate last summer is over the moon. It has already anointed a ā€œPopes Tableā€ and a ā€œpoperinniā€ pizza. lol. .I though it was interesting that his Chicago area brother said they usually spoke every day.

What he chooses to do is up to him, but he is allowed to keep his current citizenships.

And as a cardinal residing in Rome and attached to the Vatican, he was already entitled to Vatican citizenship. Whether he claimed it is a different question.

He voted in Chicago (or at least someone claiming to be him; it is Chicago after all) in 2012, 2014, and 2016. He’s American.

He has dual citizenship, U.S. and Peru. He apparently was registered as Republican. He exercised a right.

Illinois doesn’t have registration but he pulled a Republican ballot in those primaries. Anyone can choose and you can choose differently for different elections.

Ah … my state does that, too. I sometimes vote Republican in primaries because no Democrats run for office in my local area … I want to have some say in who will get into office. But I’d be bummed if people thought that meant that I’m Republican.

Interesting / fun facts I learned from oor local Chicago news ( most reported nationally as well)

  1. Popes maternal grandparents registered on the census in the early 1900’s in Louisiana as ā€œ Black/Mulattoā€. It is believed they or their families were from Haiti or the Dominican Republic and were bi-racial. When they went to Illinois in the 1920’s they put ā€œWhiteā€ on the census….a common practice among white passing people who left the south.

  2. Pope and his brothers talk every day. And play Wordle

  3. Pope watched the movie ā€œConclave ā€œ before going into the real one. His brother was teasing him he should watch so he’d ā€œ know how to behaveā€ and it turned out he just did.

  4. When he called his brother immediately after becoming pope, his brother didn’t pick up because he was busy being interviewed. Tv cameras picked up his brother amsweing a FaceTime call on his IPad. The Popes first words…. a mildly annoyed ā€œ why didn’t you answer your phone?!ā€

  5. Pope was at the 2005 worlds series when the team he likes. The white Sox were in the series. There is footage of this

I’m just saying he voted as an American, so even though he has dual (triple?) citizenship, he’s still an American. He lived his first 30 years in the US, is US educated, then lived here at other times since 1982 too. He was head of the Augustinian Order and I believe was stationed in Chicago, although the position involved a lot of travel around the world to visit its missions. I think it will be fun to see his (Chicago based) family at his installment. The brothers all look alike.

I think he’s a great choice. Very educated, speaks 4 languages and can read 2 more, and appears to be a nice person. Many sports teams are claiming him - White Sox, Cubs, Bears, Villanova, any team that has a Villanova grad (or 3, like the Knicks)…

Do I think he can solve all the problems of the world. No. No one could.

Agree that he still has strong ties to his American roots because he’s so close to his brothers. He apparently talk to them daily. He was in Chicago area just last summer visiting his brother here. And did so often over the years. . And would visit his Florida brother in winter.

Hopefully this is fine in this case as it pertains to the new pope. And hopefully I’ve given it as a gift link!

It’s an article about the Pope’s creole roots. Wouldn’t it be fascinating on Finding your Roots on PBS?

Six degrees of the Pope:

My daughter’s BFF’s uncle is a Catholic priest and Chaplain at a big university.

I asked my D jokingly if her friend’s uncle knows the new Pope and she said he knows him, and very well!
