Who else hates Apple and VW ads?

Why I hate Apple ads

The ones I abhor are the ones juxtaposing the stuffy, uncool PC with the hip, edgy Mac. I feel like I’m having my intelligence insulted (much more so than the average ad) as a young person: this is what corporate America comes up with when trying to appeal to the iPod generation? There’s the painfully unoriginal caricature of the “uncool” guy, replete with the thin hair, stocky build, horrible suit, and the charisma of Lou Dobbs. Then there’s the painfully unoriginal caricature of the “cool” guy, replete with long greasy hair, hipster clothing, and the charisma of Lou Dobbs. I’m also insulted as a PC owner, as I love my laptop and I wouldn’t trade it for a trendy Mac anytime soon, no matter how hard Apple tries to convince me that by not buying their machines, I’ll be a pasty office slave with a bad haircut.

Why I hate VW ads

Are there any other ads out there more disturbing than the ones put forth by VW, where people in VW vehicles are involved in horrible accidents that come out of nowhere yet emerge from the wreckage unscathed? At first, I thought I was watching a MADD commercial, but no, it’s… Volkswagen? I had to witness the horror of a near-death experience for the financial benefit of a car company who makes a poor man’s Honda? You feel traumatized and cheated at the same time. But ultimately, the most disturbing afterthought is this: what happened to the people in the other car?

PS

Why is Common doing Gap ads?

macs indeed suck.
no viruses? i wonder why, maybe its cause macs SUCK so much that hackers know no one uses them and thus arnt even worth making viruses for.
what a stupid argument. Psh, no viruses.

I never quite got this whole argument between PCs and macs. pcs indeed run more software, because developers know they dominate the marketplace. They are more numbers based, so they are better at things like work docs, spreadsheets, etc.

Macs are inherently more for artwork, photo video music,… etc. They dont get viruses because a) many people don’t use macs and b)Newer Macintosh operating systems, such as the Mac OS X, is built on the Unix kernel, which is one of the oldest and most secure operating systems available. Macs also always have the potential to be faster than any pc because Pc’s all run ontop of DOS, whereas Macs are a single-layered OS.

There are good and bad reasons for both. Choose which bests fits you.

dont forget macbooks spontaneously explode.
if this happened at your home, consider yourself lucky. just imagine what would happen if your macbook caught fire during a flight!!!

Umm…are you not forgetting that many pc laptops have also caught on fire and exploded? You should try and get unbiased facts before jumping to conclusions.

Common’s on the verge of selling out.

He’s still cool though.

i’d rather watch entertaining vw and mac ads if i have to watch 20 minutes of commercials for a one hour show.

the gap ad really annoys me, just like old navy ads.

I too really dislike the Apple ads. The Apple guy acts like a prick in them, and it just turns me off. I think Apple computers look cool and I know some very educated computer geeks who legitimately like them better than Windows, but there is no question that their ads turn me off.

Macs are overpriced POSes. $2200 for a computer I can get for $200-400? NO!

I’ll just buy the PC and put Darwin/Mac on there myself ;)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEAGmBRC1dc

runningcircles1,

Exaggerating much?

nbachris,

I’m not a huge fan of the Mac campaign, but I did kinda like the freezing one. That, and I just like to see John Hodgman doing his thing. He’s funny.

Well, part of it is market saturation, but there’s also the UNIX build of the OS. That and the general lack of security holes compared to Windows in the past. Vista may change things. We can only hope.

And yes, Macs just totally suck. Especially since you can do everything you do on a Wintel, but in many cases with fewer hassles. That sucks.

Not much exageration, actually.

I “built” similar machines to get a cost analysis of both, and here were my results:

Similar Hardware-
-2.33 GHz Intel Core Duo 2 Processor on PC, 1.83 GHz on Mac
-512 MB RAM
-160 GB HD on both (IDE/PATA on Mac, SATA on PC)
-Integrated Graphics/Sound/NIC
-17 inch wide screen

Mac: $1199
PC: $399 + $100 mail-in rebate = $299 :-)

$900 difference there. And, imagine if I had bought the parts myself and built it ;)

Except that some of us need a NOTEBOOK computer.

Find me a notebook computer for $399 with the same components.

Oh, and what speed is the RAM?

677 MHz on both.

I’ll “build” a notebook and post for PC and Mac.

For the notebook:

-2.00 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo for PC, for Mac same but 2.33 GHz
-120 GB hard drive
-2 GB RAM, 667 MHz
-15.4 inch LCD
-Integrated sound/graphics/NIC

Mac: $2499
PC: $1259 + $100 rebate = $1159

Difference of: $1340

Also, PC manufacturers allow for much greater flexibility in customization, whereas Macs are limited.

One can get minimal, economy features and get a desktop fro $199-299 or a laptop for $399-699 by eliminating unneeded features. I could not do this on the Mac website. Also, one is able to go to other stores/websites and compare offers on PCs, whereas Apple has a monopoly on Mac.

That’s what really irks me about Macs: the lack of choice/price differentiation. Otherwise, they could increase their marketshare much more.

Market share is not everything. In fact, it can be bad for profits at times.

Something that a lot of younger (mostly males) people seem to ignore when making computer purchase decisions is the value-added features of a Mac.

Macs always have been, still are, and always will be garbage.

I brought my PC desktop up, including a bulky CRT (always the classic choice for gaming), got a new LCD and my system is vicious now.

Based on what? Your needs? My needs are different than yours. I don’t need a super fast video card in my notebook. I need a reliable system, good OS, and support when something goes wrong. Apple offered that.

Other than the gaming handicap, what makes them “garbage?”
