I have been thinking about where I get the most emotional support. To be honest, it is not from my husband, who is unable to see any other point of view but his own and isn’t interested in hearing it if it differs from his. He gets annoyed if you question him…

So I go to my woman friends for emotional support and sharing.

Just wondering if I am more the rule than the exception. Do you find the men in your life to be genuinely supportive and willing to listen?

In a word, nope. I like that you made me think about this. Upon reflection I decided that my greatest support comes from my sister. Realizing that made me appreciate her even more.

Mostly from my husband but he is a male and I do cut him some slack. My daughters and relatives do support me sometimes but I spend 24/7 with my husband.

I hear you- guys think differently about what is " supportive" behavior than women.
You have to be very specific, I have found & spell out what is helpful.

Emerald, I laughed at what you wrote. I was upset about something last night and my BF texted me saying “why don’t you come over here, that will make you feel better!” I texted him back saying “you’re supposed to come to me, not the other way around…” and he writes back “but I’m in bed already.”

The older we get, the more it’s definitely my husband. I think we’ve both mellowed, in a good way. Others wear me out after a while, but he is a rock for me.

I love my husband. But, he can’t give me a neutral sounding board. He simply examines most situations according to a) who gets the blame or credit, or b) whether he’s able to “fix it.” Honorable intentions, but not what I’m looking for.

Are we married to the same man? (and, if so, would that make us sister wives?)
We’re working on taking turns speaking in my house because sometimes I just want to be listened to.

Apparently my H was absent when this was taught in kindergarten. He is terrible at interruputing, finishing my thoughts, and exceeding his conversational allotment.

I frequently tell him that God gave him two ears and one mouth for a reason.

Definitely not my husband. I feel lucky to have 3-4 really close good friends I can talk to. I just hope I’m as good a friend to them as they are to me.

I think it’s time to bring back imaginary friends. They’re always there when your real friends are busy. They think you look great, even if the mirror doesn’t agree. They are amazed and impressed by what you do every day. They always agree when you say you need chocolate.

I’d have to say my DH. I have no daughters (only two sons) and my sister is not the “get close and share problems” kind of woman. My SIL is an alien from another planet. My friends at work are good for small stuff but when it’s big stuff, I turn to DH.
