D1’s BF’s birthday is in a few days. I’d like to send a gift to recognize it. Would be very convenient to use Amazon to send it.
One thing he and I have in common is PIE. I love to eat it, he likes to make it! Both sweet and savory. I’ve been trying to think of a couple of accessories to get him. He is someone who is not going to want several pie plates. For Christmas I got him the Sister Pie cookbook which he loves - so I don’t want to do another cookbook.
I thought about pie weights. Are they helpful?
I also saw this on Amazon - the concept makes sense to me and they have good reviews but…is this a thing in the pie world??? https://www.amazon.com/Creuset-Stoneware-Funnel-Cerise-Cherry/dp/B007K7ZBXM/ref=sr_1_13baking%2Caps%2C158&sr=8-13&th=1
Or feel free to share your favorite pie baking accessory.
^^^ I was looking at those @thumper1 ! Foil is such a hassle!
Or how about one of those cut out thingy’s (no idea what they’re called) to make lattice crust. I’m good at making crust taste good, but I’m awful at making it look pretty!
Pie weights are great and very useful if he makes blind baked crusts. I use mine often.
I second the ring that goes around the edge of the crust. Mine is metal and came from Pampered Chef.
I also have one pie pan i prefer over the others. It’s a Longaberger pottery pan…and it just makes the best pies.
I have used a pie bird for fruit pies and have found it helpful. My mom used pie weights. I have a set of itty bitty pastry cutters for making designs from the dough… small leaves and other shapes. i love them. Have had it a long time… I think I bought it from Williams-Sonoma.
What does a pie bird do? They look pretty.
@bookworm, a pie bird inserted into the center of the pie acts like a vent… for fruit pies, usually. Allows steam to escape. Helps to keep the pie innards from oozing through the crust and prevents the crust from getting soggy.
I got the silocone one one because it’s adjustable. I had a metal one that wasn’t. PITA.
Look at Williams Sonoma. They have birds, weights, rings and things to make shapes out of dough on the pie. I have leaves for example I put on pumpkin pies.
I’ll be ordering today via Amazon whatever I decide. They have mini cut out thingys too! The mini cutters are actually a hot item these days as people use them to make fancy lunch items for kids lunchboxes!

I am laughing out loud at the “customer photos” attached to that Sur La Table pie dish!!! Exactly what my cat would do! That is a great dish.
H is the pie person in our house, and he has weights he really loves.
Also, this thread title makes me really happy. The first half is so nicely poetic - very appropriate for April.
Who has used a pie bird?
Neither you nor I . . .
I know yet in life I will be a pie baker.
I am all in to eat them just need to make time to make them!
Also interesting about the pie weights…I see loose ones and I see pie weight “chains”.
An edge shield.
A pie carrier.
