Who here has not gotten COVID? Who has long COVID?

She’s the best. I’ve gotten her newsletters since the beginning of COVID.

Metformin as treatment for COVID-19 appears to have significant favorable effects.

It is also inexpensive, although it is prescription-only. Its most common use is for type 2 diabetes.

Had Covid three times. I am always fatigued. Long Covid or getting old? I’m 72.

My PCP prescribe Metformin (I am not diabetic or pre diabetic) as a prophylactic. I think it was Hopkins or Yale - that came out with a specific protocol. It was along the lines of:

Test postive

Day 1 and 2 - 1 x500 mg
Day 3 and 4 2 x500 mg
Day 4 - 14 - 3X 500 mg

When I got my second case of COVID in December 2023 (in the UK during the massive upswing of JN1.) I went on this protocol.

My PCP and I decided I’d just stay on 1x 500 mg ER dose per day. It can’t hurt and may actually help with cognitive function. If I get COVID again, I’d just jump to the highest daily dosage. The reason it is ramped up more slowly for someone who doesn’t take a base dose is that it can be rather upsetting to the digestive track.

This study from a year ago found that metformin reduced the risk of long COVID:

The metformin protocol used in that study was:

  • Day 1: 500mg
  • Day 2-5: 500mg twice daily
  • Day 6-14: 500mg in morning, 1000mg in evening

Wow, that’s really interesting. Could it be all this time, we’ve discounted antibiotics as valuable in treating viral diseases?

FDA says not to use COVID-19 tests from Cue Health due to risk of false results.

The following letter from the FDA to Cue Health describes what the FDA does not like:

https://www.fda.gov/inspections-compliance-enforcement-and-criminal-investigations/warning-letters/cue-health-inc-675673-05092024

Specifically, Cue Health made significant changes to the product on October 23, 2023 without notifying the FDA. The FDA also says that the quality control is not sufficient to ensure that the product meets the claimed performance in result accuracy.

Sounds like the ship is run by folks with little knowledge of the FDA regulations. Ugh. Not good news for the diagnostic industry that is already struggling since the investments dried up.

Study detected SARS-CoV-2 antigens in a significant percentage of people’s plasma samples months after recovering from COVID-19, but before reinfection or vaccination.

Well – scratchy throat and runny nose and a little tired . . . Tested positive. AND I got a booster 2 weeks ago . . . Yuck.

So sorry. I seem to have heard about a lot of people getting Covid now. A few for the first time.

That stinks. Hope it doesn’t develop into anything more serious, and you will be OK soon.

So far, I have not heard of too many cases here in my neck of the woods. I’m afraid college and HS graduations later in June will lead to a local spike, too.

Thanks! Started paxlovid today, so hopefully it doesn’t get worse than these cold symptoms.

Your local epidemiologist reported that COVID was at an all time low a month ago. But there’s been a summer spike in all of the years Covid has been around and they would expect one again.
