Who's applying ED to Penn?

Dear XXXX,

Congratulations! On behalf of the entire Penn community, it gives me great pleasure to invite you to attend the University of Pennsylvania as a member of the Wharton School Class of 2013.

We are delighted that you selected Penn as your first choice for your college experience. You and your fellow applicants are the strongest in Penn’s distinguished history and I look forward to welcoming you to campus as part of the 257th graduating class since Benjamin Franklin founded the University.

Whether through your search for knowledge, devotion to service, or continuing engagement within your community, you will contribute to the vitality of Penn and Philadelphia. In your academic and personal pursuits you instinctively seek out connections across disciplines, and you excel at the highest levels. In all these ways, you already demonstrate commitment to the goals and philosophies of this University. Happily, this is only the beginning!

We are sure of your power to excite our faculty, to enliven our campus and city, and to transform the lives of those you meet. I urge you, as one of the newest members of the Penn community, to make these next four years your springboard for lifelong learning - take risks, explore, discover.

This is the start of your next great journey.

Sincerely,

Eric J. Furda

I think this is from 2008…but is anyone drolling over this like I am?

^ There you go. Now see if you can find the one for the Class of 2014 and prove me wrong. :)

reading that freaks me out!!! oh, btw where is everyone else applying?

To Everyone: I took an extra subject test in November for schools like JHU that required three subject test. However, the scores were delayed and I have yet to receive a formal reply from Collegeboard. If they eventually show up, will I have to send that score to Penn? I’m pretty sure they would be of no use right now anyway because Penn only looks at two subjects and most decisions have already been made.

I’m applying to Wharton :D

Btw, does anyone know if math scores are the end all be all? Like if I made a B in one of my math classes… would this greatly impact my chances?

Just to give everyone an idea, the following are letters from 2009 concerning their decision:

DEFER:

Dear XXXX,

After careful consideration of your application to the University of Pennsylvania for the Class of 2013, the Admissions Selection Committee has decided to defer its final decision until the Regular Decision notification date of March 31, 2009. I realize that you must be disappointed by this delay, but I want to assure you that you are still being considered for admission to Penn.

The Admissions Committee chooses this action when we wish to have more time to evaluate your application. While we are clearly impressed by your accomplishments, we must be cautious with the limited number of spaces Penn has available. Because we want to give your candidacy the fullest consideration, we ask that you send us a mid-year report of your first semester grades.

If you have any questions, or if this office can be of any assistance to you during the coming months, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Sincerely,

ADMIT:

Dear XXXX,

Congratulations! On behalf of the entire Penn community, it gives me great pleasure to invite you to attend the University of Pennsylvania as a member of the School of Engineering and Applied Science Class of 2013.

REJECT:

Dear XXXX,

I am sorry to notify you that after reviewing your application thoroughly, our selection committee is unable to offer you admission to the University of Pennsylvania’s Class of 2013. All aspects of your application, the academic and the co-curricular, were carefully considered.

Perhaps the most difficult part of my job is disappointing thousands of students, whose accomplishments are exciting and whose futures are promising. Most of our applicants are qualified to successfully pursue the rigorous program of study at Penn. However, because of the large number of outstanding applicants, we can admit only a relatively small percentage of those seeking admission.

Thank you for your interest in Penn and I wish you all the best as you pursue your educational goals.

Sincerely,

Dean of Admissions

Wow. Reading through the defer/accept/reject letters sends a chill down my spine. It’s so surreal how we’ll be getting one of those in nine days.

Still don’t know if I should look out for a Hurrah Hurrah or not
@free2rhyme: have you found the class of 2014 letters?

It was on this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-pennsylvania/1043475-penn-defer-letter.html

Basically if it starts with Hurrah, Hurrah or Congratulations, you are in.

If you have “After much consideration”, it will probably be a defer (but I have also seen some people say it is a rejection letter).

If it starts with “I am sorry”, then it will probably be a rejection letter.

I don’t know about everyone else, but after seeing the rejection letter, it gave me the first realization of getting a rejection letter and basically made me even more hopeless.

I am sorry. No one on this thread wants to see those three words.
Future Yalies get a singing Bulldog. Jealous ~

I just had MASSIVE chills reading the reject letter. I felt so depressed.

:O Same here^ That rejection letter really gave me the chills…

Hey guys EmPaige21 is probably crying right now due to the depressing environment in this thread. Wanna change subjects?

Oh man. That rejection letter made my heart sink O.o. I guess I should read it over and over so I it doesn’t seem as bad when it actually happens for real :P

Ok lets change subjects: can you guys help me look for back up colleges. Specifically, what I am looking for is a school that satisfies full need.

Do you guys know any schools that provide full need based aid (satisfy applicants need 100%) besides the ivy’s? I know there are a few outside the ivy leagues but how many of them ACTUALLY satisfy 100% need?

I have been looking but can’t find anything. Do you guys know some link that shows all the colleges that provide full need based aid? Thanks

Woohoo! My tears have dissipated.

@free2rhyme
I know Georgetown and Tufts have really nice financial aid and claim that they meet full need.
I’m applying to both, and have friends who attend both and are very content with their money situation!

Also- what are you guys doing this weekend? :D

I will be catching up on sleep! It’s crazy to think that it’s the last weekend before decisions are out…

@free2rhyme - What about colleges that is both needblind and satisfies full need? I know that the needblind part is fairly important to me as an international.

@ Empaige21, thanks a bunch. I had some trouble finding some schools with being Canadian and all.

For the weekend, I will try to answer the supplements to at least 3 more colleges (which I still need to find). So by Dec. 9, I can become more callous and become more obsessive about the other 3 colleges. And SAT for the last time on Sat. Hopefully get and play some Uncharted 3. You know typical stuff…

Side question: how many posts does it take to become a member instead of a junior member?

Whatever happens next Friday, each and every one of you guys is a true winner, and will thrive and do well wherever you end up (and for decades thereafter!). Trust me, I know–I have the perspective of seeing this whole college thing from way down the road on the other side. And I’m a great judge of character. :)
