Who's ordering an iPhone 5?

lizard, If someone in the USA is unhappy with their pay, they are free to quit and try to find a job which offers them more money. Good luck with that in today’s economy.

If you don’t like Apple products for whatever reason then don’t buy them. It’s as simple as that.

It looks like the benefits for Apple Store employees is better than that of the typical unskilled retail job. That said, there are a lot of people with college degrees taking these retail jobs, skilled or unskilled.

yeah, I know it’s every man for himself. Why do we even bother celebrating Labor Day in America anymore?

Maybe you were celebrating Labor Day - I was in the office.

didn’t mean to go off on tangent…I’m not planning to buy an iPhone 5 soon. I’m using a 4 now and may buy a replacement used 4s from a friend within next few weeks. I haven’t mastered the phone I have now…it meets my present needs.

The trades are announcing that Samsung will move up the release date of the Galaxy S 4 in response to the new iPhone…

These may not be sufficient for you, but these are some of the improvements over the previous iPhones:

-Larger screen.
-But thinner and 20% lighter.
-Camera improvements–e.g., can take a panoramic picture, or take a still in the middle of shooting video.
-Will be able to take advantage of faster cellular networks. (4g LTE)?
-Longer lasting battery.

Negatives:

-Will require new cables and possibly will not work–even with a converter/adapter–with various docks such as those that would allow you to play music through a stero system or video through a TV.
-Still not as gynormous as some of the Androids, although there is the argument that people–men in particular-- want it to fit neatly into a shirt pocket, and not exceed the optimal size for one-head use.

I think that the larger phones will fit easily into a shirt pocket. Weight might be an issue though.

For me, the bigger issue is putting it in the pockets of jeans. I routinely put an iPod Touch in my jeans pocket but I wouldn’t do that with a Samsung Galaxy Nexus for example. Both will fit into my pocket but I’d worry that the larger Samsung would bend because of the curvature of the leg that it is next to and because my jeans are relatively snug.

Also, it’s one-handed use, not one-head use [typo I’m sure].

Not a typo, but damn you autocorrect (on my iPad), althiigh I’m sure it will work ok even if you have two heads.

There’s even a book: [Damn You Auto Correct! Best Of DYAC](http://www.damnyouautocorrect.com/category/best-of-dyac/)

Pizzagirl:
Depending on the details, that’s not much of an offer from your company since with a contract the iPhone 4 is now $0 and the iPhone 4S is now $99. The iPhone 5 is $199 (more with more memory).

As far as whether the iPhone 5 is worth the $199 above and beyond the iPhone 4 or $100 more than a 4S if your company will pay for that is up to you. Obviously a lot of posters on this thread think so. I don’t. (I also have the old 3G but may upgrade to the 4)

A lot of people on the Jummy Kimmel show felt the iPhone 4S (that they thought was an iPhone 5) was superior to an…iPhone 4S.

I am glad that I am helping. It is kind of scary that one product could have that kind of impact.

The iPhone is a global product - I think that the Chinese market exceeds the US market now. It’s fun thinking about all of the other companies and employees that take part in making money off iPhone -related sales.

It is possible that PG’s company made that offer when the iPhone4 was more expensive. The new prices above are a result of the introduction of the sixth generation.

Since it is obvious that PG does not upgrade often, it makes more sense to grab the last technology and ride it for a few years. Fwiw, when looking at the price of the service, keeping the last technology for 24 to 36 months only adds between 7 and 10 dollars a month to the bill. A rather insignificant amount when compared to the usage costs.

Last but not least, the 3G phone that will be retired can be unlocked for overseas use, and could come in handy for a traveler abroad.

Unless one is really strapped for cash or parsimonious to the extreme, it makes little sense to upgrade to the iPhone4.

PS I also skipped the latest upgrades, and this made my decision very simple. And, I am a s far a Apple product fan as you might meet. :)

I have never owned any kind of cell phone,
although I do own Apple stock.

So latichever, I appreciate all you amazing two-headed iPhone users for the attention you bring to the product. Thank you, thank you.

But some companies will pay the monthly fee but not the equipment cost. Some people would rather save 7-10 dollars a month for 2 years and others don’t care.

That’s me - the latter (sometimes, especially for toys for me as opposed to college for kids and yes, I know, $199 isn’t even a drop in the bucket compared to college costs).

I’ve got to disagree with this one. For some people it makes sense - if they don’t care about the delta in features/function between the 4 and the 5 to the extent of $199 then it makes little sense to pay $199 for something they don’t care that much about. Obviously some people value those features to that sum and are willing to pay for it.

I’m not knocking the iPhone 5 - it’s just that I don’t see a compelling reason someone would feel they need to dump their iPhone 4S or 4 (for example, as some responding to this thread are doing) for the 5. Some people get caught up in the frenzy though - like the Cabbage Patch Dolls. Some people will truly value the new features/function though.

The next question - are you people getting the $199 one, the $299 one, or the $399 one?

Oh, that is understandable. We all make decisions based on our individual situation. Although I am a “lazy” upgrader as I have clung to a 3G for as long as I could and avoided the upgrades, there is a time to make a decision. In my book, when I add all the costs of a three (or four) year usage cost, the difference in the equipment cost becomes really, really small. In addition, it might help me jump a couple of later upgrades.

And, fwiw, there are more than cosmetic differences between the last editions. Here’s a nice table that is easy to follow.

http://www.iphonehacks.com/2012/09/compare-iphone-5-iphone-4s-iphone-4-iphone-3gs.html</a></p>

A heavy user as I suspect PG to be might be happy to know that she will have a doubled memory and access to the new LTE network. As someone who has been critical of the low memory of the original iPad, I have learned how much difference more memory means. And, yes, I also bypassed the couple of iPad upgrades. And I did get the 199 El Cheapo version iPhone5. :)

For an anti fan boi, I am surprised at the length of time you’ve had an iPhone xiggi. ;)

When I get an iphone5 ( which won’t be for a while), I’ll get the one with the most memory. You can never have too much.

I think the middle one is the best choice because 16 is just too small. I’ve never been able to fill a 64. Even my iPad still has 10 gigs left and I have gigantic apps like the Birds of North America and a GPS with all of N. America plus a stupid amount of music. (If you walk up to a sleeping cat and play bird sounds it freaks him out. The first time. Cats learn faster than people. Heck, all animals learn faster than people if food or a threat is involved.)

I went with the 32. My iPod Touch is 32 and it’s fine. We have one iPad at 16 and one at 32. 16 means that it would be hard to carry my music library around with me. My music library isn’t that large - it would just make it harder to juggle videos with music and books and email. With 32, I find that I don’t have to juggle.

I might still carry a music player around with me like my old iPod Touch. I don’t really need my phone when I run on the treadmill and the iPod Touch would be good enough.
