I activated Ds iPhone upgrade a few months ago at home from her old dumb phone. It was very easy, and just took a few minutes on the phone w Verizon.
I expect it would be even faster with a new number.

Ahh, very fair. Someone in another thread recommended Smartphone Service for just $30/month | XDA Forums”>[GUIDE] Smartphone Service for just $30/month | XDA Forums]this technique to save a few $$$ on smartphone plans. I’m planning on giving it a shot when the new Google phone comes out.

The iPad 2 Upgrade went smoothly. I have not upgraded the iPad 2 from the original OS that it came with because the upgrade failed when I tried it. There was some incompatibility between some stuff on the device and the upgrade procedure. It appears that this has been fixed with iOS 6.

I saw the new Maps application and it looks fine. I haven’t tried to find any melting bridges but I installed Google Earth just in case. I might try MapQuest too. I installed the Google YouTube app which works but it doesn’t have an iPad variant and I don’t know whether or not Google is going to do one. I might try the browser version if the App isn’t good enough.

I actually haven’t used the iPad 2 in a while as I’ve been using my Android tablet. The iPad 2 feels a lot more solid and a lot more like a quality product and the big screen is nice but it is heavier. I will most likely use the Androd more than the iPad 2 as the iPad 2 is more of a house tablet and it’s used mainly by my wife.

If Apple could come up with a smaller tablet with the same resolution, then I think that I would like that.

MacRumors is reporting that Google is said to have already submitted a native ios maps app to apple. There is question about apple rejection it on the grounds that it directly competes with existing functionality. Several sources, The Guardian, 9to5Mac and TechCrunch, have also carried the story. Having said this, The Loop’s Jim Dalrymple who has good sources at apple is saying this is not true. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. It sure would be nice. I REALLY liked the old maps.

I’d guess that there will be advertising on any separate Mapping application.

MapQuest, Garmin and Waze already compete with Apple’s new mapping application so I don’t see why Apple wouldn’t approve another entry from Google.

Apple has a long history of not cooperating with google, but I don’t disagree with you in theory BCE.

Google had someone on Apple’s board a few years ago so the history may not be that long.

iPhone 5 arrived but I don’t have time to look at it. Maybe this afternoon.

Daughter opened up the box and took the earphones - she really likes them - which probably means that I’m not going to get to use them. I hooked the phone up to my MacBook Pro and it gave me my new phone number. It’s nice because the area code and exchange are the same as all of the rest of our household phone numbers.

I should try calling it.

Just post your number here. We’ll all call you!

Setting it up was easy. I haven’t used it yet though. My son gets my fairly new iPod touch and my wife gets my LD phone.

I need to put my apps and contacts on it.

I will show it to folk at the office that wanted to see it when I get to the office.

The old stuff is going for cheap. Got an e-mail this morning from Best Buy for everything from a free iPhone 4 w/ 8K to a 4S w/ 64K for $199, all for two year activation with all the major carriers.

The melting bridge image is just not fully rendered. Maybe the connection stalled during transmission or maybe a photo was taken for effect and to make a story.

I’m amused by the inaccuracies people are harping about in maps because I find google maps to be inaccurate. I remind myself to triple check what it shows because it may be the wrong state or some place somewhat near but not what I want. (In this regard, I loved a recent article about people showing up at Walden … in Lynn, MA not Concord because they accepted that Walden meant THE Walden.) I think some of the carping is the vast anti-Apple sentiment - check Slashdot for a taste - and some is the weird expectation that Apple must, somehow must be able to do this perfectly coupled with the “it’s newer so it should be that much better” idea which we see in technology as though experience has no value.

One of my favorite google map errors was its refusal to locate one of my kid’s universities in the right city. I filed errors with google because it is not in Brooklyn or Queens.

The level of detail on maps is not up to snuff and I assume that’s “yet”. I checked University of Rochester, for example, and the building names don’t show and the building outlines aren’t visible in standard view.

New Samsung commercial making fun of the iPhone5. It’s pretty funny.

All of the mapping programs have errors.

I was taking my daughter to Logan Airport and it put me on a different route to get there because of traffic. I looked at the instructions and rebooted the device as I knew that the instructions were wrong - drive 40 miles on route 495 when it should have been 5. My daughter asked me where we would be if we drove 40 miles on route 495. I said - in the Atlantic Ocean.

The new dock connector is fabulous. I have one 30-pin device, two micro-usb devices, one mini-usb device and the iPhone on my desk. It is so easy to use the new dock connector compared to all of the other connectors. You don’t have metal on metal that fatigues over time and you don’t have to worry about orientation. The toughest part of the micro-usb connectors is that I have to put my reading glasses on to make sure that the connectors line up properly. It’s not as bad with the mini-usb - I can do that with terminal or reading glasses. They should make the new Apple dock connector the standard for all phones.

That video was funny.

Your momHaha haha haha

My son showed up at an AT&T store in suburban Philadelphia today and got his iPhone 5. Thank goodness, as he lost his last phone over a month ago and has been impossible to get a hold of except through Twitter while using campus WiFi. Personally I would have started his new solo account with a free iPhone 4, but it’s his money and his judgement – and hopefully an economic lesson of some kind in there.

The joy of having the last big thing on campus … Priceless!

Now, plenty of people might be interested in arranging for the phone to become lost. Better recommend an ounce of extra care for the new gadget.

Check out this video on YouTube. Some take the unboxing to a new level.

Although the new earbuds sound great, an advantage of having to buy 3rd party earphones was that you didn’t have to use white ones, which shout " I have an easy to pawn Apple product".
