Who's ordering an iPhone 5?

I’ve used those UK plugs before. They really do look like something out of the '40s.

iFhone 5…just buy, and don’t ask why…

Lizard, now that is funny! I was ready to line up for one but the mapping thing worries me. That’s the app I use most. If I go for the free upgrade to a 4gs will I get the old os and google maps?

Funny to think that all of you buying iphones may end up improving the maps on my Tom Tom GPS.

No dragonmom, the new maps is not specific to the i5 it’s part of ios6 which all iPhones are using now (if you update). I’m not sure how far back the new iOS supports. It’s possible the older i3’s are not supported and don’t get the new maps.

I have a 4s and updated to ios6 and have the new maps. I loved google maps, but I’m sure this will work out fine as well.

I also assume Google will, as noted in this thread, release an iOS version of their maps because they can make money from it. I doubt it will be as full featured as what they offer for their own OS.

For anyone who ordered a phone and had it sent to a different address, do not turn on the new phone until the person who has the number is there with the old phone, otherwise the old phone’s sim card will be de-activated.

In Jym’s case, she needs to wait for her son to show up before she turns his new phone on, otherwise his old phone will not work (I assume he maybe far from home). ATT would be reluctant to give him another sim card for his old phone when his new phone is activated.

I ordered an iPhone 5 using H’s upgrade. He turned it on when it arrived and the activation was very seamless, except it was suppose to be my phone. We couldn’t get it resolved over the phone, both of us had to go to an ATT store, so new sim card could be put in his old phone and my new phone.

Yes, well aware of this. Was just joking about testing it out.
When younger s was due for an upgrade, I wanted to trash my blackberry and get the Iphone4s. Had to wait til DS was in town for a holiday (a year ago) so we could do the simcard swap at the AT&T store and I could get the phone without accidentally deactivating his and getting his phone # (right when he was waiting to hear about his job offers!! That would have been bad.) Worked fine

The iOS 6 upgrade can be used for iPhones 3gs, 4, and 4s, but is not designed for the older, slower iPhone 3 model. Here’s a review someone did for iOS 6 upgrade install on his 3gs.
I’m going to do the iOS upgrade on my 4 and my sister is going to install on her 3gs–we were concerned about installing OS upgrade on the 3gs thinking it would maybe gag–but she’s going to do it now.

It looks like the Verizon iPhone 5 is unlocked and GSM-capable so their phones can be used on multiple networks.

Mine has shipped from China as has my friend, Barry’s phone. I know this because Barry wanted to share this exciting news with me at 5am by text message.

You mean your ex-friend, Barry.

Dumb question but how do you read text messages on the iPhone?

Go to the “messages” icon on the phone. It should be one of the main ones and looks like a dialogue balloon. The messages show up in little balloons like comic book stuff. iphone to iphone is “i messages”

iMessages are blue colored, text messages are green (and, of course, there are other differences :)):

I think that I’ll have to actually receive a text message to see how it works. This phone number hasn’t been spammed yet.

I do like the device quite a bit. Today I went out with just the iPhone. I didn’t bring my RAZR, MiFi and iPod Touch with me. The AT&T service seems to be better than Verizon around town. I think that the MiFi has a stronger antenna than the iPhone but it also goes through the battery fairly quickly. I do wish that there was a faster way to switch cellular data on and off. At some point I might just leave it on all the time if I can be sure that I’m not going to burn through a lot of data.

Do most folks here turn it on and off or just leave it on all the time?

I have unlimited data so I don’t count…
DH doesn’t and he keeps his on all the time. He generally doesn’t use things like fb, youtube, internet, etc., while we’re out unless he needs to look something up that’s really necessary (a phone number or address of a store or restaurant). S2 I’m sure uses fb, etc. when he’s out but not excessively. Any app that draws from the web is going to use data also (like fb, cc, etc.). Things like watching videos will really drain your data. Otherwise, text and email is going to be negligible. Neither DH or S2 have ever gone over their allotted data which is 2G.

I have unlimited also but both Ds have two GBs and never come close to going over.

I don’t leave the wireless on all the time because my home Internet connection is actually slower than 3G.
I think it also helps the battery. ( I also have an extended battery case- mophie juice pack air)

But you were talking about the mi-fi’s battery. When I used one i just took a backup battery with me, cause you are right, they don’t last very long.

BC, you can track your data usage in “settings” -> “usage” -> “cellular usage” under cell network data. You can reset the counter to zero and see how much you actually use per week etc. Mine says that since June 9 I sent 280 Mb and received 1 Gb - wow, that’s too little, have to correct that ASAP. If you keep it on wifi, you do not burn through much data.

Well, 4 MB used so far in three days. I guess that I don’t have to worry very much at this consumption rate. The biggest data usage for me is most likely email.
