Who's ordering an iPhone 5?

There was an article on Verizon iPhone 5s being unlocked and being usable with other carriers a while ago in one of the tech news sites.

[Verizon iPhone 5 is unlocked, able to accept GSM SIMs right away](Verizon iPhone 5 is unlocked, able to accept GSM SIMs right away | Engadget)

Yes, thank you, that’s what I had read online and thus was so confused yesterday when I was told vehemently by a Verizon store employee that was not the case and that all Verizon iPhone 5’s are locked. I think I’ll take a copy of this in when I speak to people at a different Verizon store today.

Got the iPhone 5 on Monday. After two days of using it, I think I made the right choice. (I had originally purchased a 4S–contract update price of $99/$199 for the 5.) The only thing I find annoying is the iPhone 5 is not compatible with the Blue Tooth in my car. Hoping I can find a fix for that.

Hopefully it’s just some setting stuff.

I bought a new car after getting the iPhone 5 and everything just works. When I turn on the car, it automatically pairs and will start playing music off the iPhone if I have it set that way. Phone calls are a breeze with BlueTooth.

It’s not the settings–it’s that the iPhone 5 lighting cord (think that’s what it’s called) doesn’t fit the BlueTooth attachment built into my car. I called the dealer (the car is 3 years old) and the guy I spoke to said he didn’t know of any type of converter–told me to call the car manufacturer. I agree about the BlueTooth phone calls–really easy to use.

Well, there should be adapters at the Apple Store. It seems that all of the adapters cost about $19 (except for one that’s $29). Not all external devices will necessarily work even with the adapter though.

You might want to search the web for your make, model and year of car along with apple lightning connector to see how other people are dealing with your issue.

Havent looked at connectors, but the lightning connector is *not * a micro usb?
Im not understanding the advantage, if it was only to reduce size.

It sounds like adapters will be available for vehicles, but not yet.

The advantages of lightning:

More than 9 watts of power
Direction doesn’t matter - you can insert the connector either way
You have a metal tongue going into a metal groove and not a metal casing going into another metal casing - this gets rid of the problem of metal fatigue over time

Update … Confirmed that Verizon iphone5 is unlocked out of the box so can theoretically be used with a European nano sim. I see a defection in my future.

Love, love, love my iPhone 5. Gave one to D and S for their last birthday. They were thrilled. H is using 4S and prefers the ‘feel’ of that. My only complaint - still can’t get S to answer my calls half the time…

I downloaded the “Readabiity” app but that is still not the answer I want to the lack of fitting magnified text to the screen. If I can find an answer to that one, I’ll be a happy iphone 5 owner.

Just found out it’s called “text reflow.”

The Google maps app is back for the iPhone. Anyone using it? I haven’t updated my iPhone4S yet because I didn’t want the Apple maps that goes with the update.

I just downloaded it and will try it out. The reviews are very good. The downside (for me) is that there is no Siri integration…I like to ask her for directions. She is loyal to the Apple maps app, understandably.

The new app is exactly why Apple released its own: Google was providing an inferior product to give Android an edge. The product they gave Apple was bit-mapped, so it loaded more slowly and used more data, and lacked turn-by-turn directions. When Apple cut them out, they seem to have realized they’d just jeopardized over $1B in revenue - that’s as of nearly 2 years ago when mobile usage was lower - and so they do the proper app.

The maps issue hasn’t slowed Apple sales but it has cost Google money so I think they made a bad business decision. Especially if you think of web traffic growth from phones and tablets and how Google was attached to Apple’s market share. As of now, somewhere near all tablet web traffic is the iPad. (I saw this in an analytic about the Surface’s share being 7x less than the Nexus share, with the larger, not the smaller being at .93% - that’s less than 1% - of tablet only web traffic and the Surface at .13%.)

I installed the new Google Maps this morning. It’s great. They have vector graphics in maps and vector graphics in traffic. They’re using the traffic information in the Apple Maps style too. In the web version, they apparently do vector graphics on maps but bitmap graphics with traffic. They’re integrated but this meant that they had to make the traffic information much more compact as Apple had done. So excellent performance and the best traffic information.

I used it with Siri to give a voice address but that was just a literal translation.

I will probably still use Apple Maps for general information, and Google maps for traffic information and my Garmin Nuvi for navigation.

My Nexus 7 is still my favorite tablet but that’s just because the size is so nice. I think that I’d prefer an iPad Mini but I’d like better specs which should come with the next version.

I haven’t had any problems with the Apple maps.

I downloaded the google maps a few weeks ago, is there a new one out? None of the maps are that current though. I built my house starting in April of 2011 and the maps still show an empty lot.

Don’t forget to track Santa! Just in case you don’t know NORAD’s Santa tracker switched from Google maps to Microsoft’s Bing maps.

Santa is now headed for Karsakbay, Kazakhstan. ETA about 1 minute from now.

I downloaded the google maps app, but mapquest was better for my use.
