Who's ordering an iPhone 5?

Android all the way!

In connection with the iPhone5, anyone ordering any insurance for it? Just curious. We have never bought insurance for any of our phones previously. In the past when we’ve had phones lost or stolen or broken, we have just gone ahead and gotten one from a family member or eBay. I think that’s probably what we would do this time as well.

Also, has anyone had problems with their iPhone battery & phone itself lasting the whole two years before the contract has to be renewed? Have never purchased an iProduct before. Thanks!

I washed my iPhone4 & putting it in a bag of rice didn’t help, so I had to replace it before my two yrs were up. I didn’t have AppleCare (although I do for my other electronics), so they charged me $100 to get a brand new phone @ the Apple store. ( if I’d had Apple care it would have been free)

Do your kids drop their phone in the toilet? My kid dropped her iphone 4 twice, once only a few month old and the other time it was about a year old. The Apple store where we got it from replaced the first for free. Secon time, she turned it off immediately and dried it for three days. It survived.

the worm always gets insurance, as he is hard on phones. His recent gift was the iphone5.with 2x memory. None of the local stores had those in stock, so we ordered thru Apple. I use a rubber case, and never get insurance.

I think Himom got her phones at a terrific price. She has earned her black belt in shopping.

Still using my iPhone 4 with service through Straight Talk. A few months ago I had the phone’s shattered backcover replaced at an Apple store for about $30. After the repair job, photos I took with flash always had a really bad blue tint to them. I finally got around to going back to the Apple store last week about it and they admitted they had forgot to remove a plastic packing sheath from inside side of the backcover. They were very apologetic about slip up, they fixed phone and the photos are fine now with flash.

Actually at the local Best Buy where DD1 and I got our iPhone 5’s the Samsung Galaxy S III was selling like crazy. DD1 had no problem getting the Walmart price but as I wanted the white one they gave us some smoke about the white not price matching because Walmart does not answer the phone yada yada. DD1 called the local Sam’s Club in front of them and got the price match.

1 1/2 year away from home does wonders for self-survival. Good girl!

I am a die-hard Apple fan. I stuck with a Mac through the 80’s. Never owned a PC,etc. So I have to ask; What were they selling Samsung Galaxy S III for?

I don’t have insurance for the iPhone as I am pretty good with electronics. Also, the iPhone 5 is supposed to be much easier to repair compared to previous generations so I am not worried about battery issues

[iPhone and iPod: Liquid damage is not covered by warranty](Water and other liquid damage to iPhone or iPod isn't covered by warranty - Apple Support)

One needs to be lucky or meet a clueless staff member to be covered for water damage on an iPhone.

They do not install LCI for cosmetic reasons. Despite the mythical tales …

Replacing a water damaged iPhone for $100 or $200 is a pretty good deal, IMO.
What do people who have damaged their Android phones do?
<a href=“May | 2009 | Ars Technica”>May | 2009 | Ars Technica;

I know water damage is not covered. I am quite experienced in that regard unfortunately. The Apple store was generous, they accomodate you. Twice we got it replaced for free or for a small fee, one was a laptop, the other iphone.

I decided to go with the insurance because I know so many people who have shattered the glass. I also have the Otter Box and that feels very sturdy.

$100 if memory serves right, not much less than a 5. But I’m talking we’d see an entire family coming to Best Buy and swap 3 or 4 older phones/smartphones for SG III’s. I was blown away. The III is a great phone, don’t get me wrong, we have 10 of them at work for development / testing, but to see another product challenge the iPhone like that was quite startling.

I’d like to see a III and a 5, both well taken care of, a week before upgrade eligibility is coming up. From my experience with iProducts and Samsungs, let’s just say I have my doubts about the III. The 5 is no Nokia, but the III is way too plasticky for a $100-150 phone.

My D and I share 2 GB and we never come close to using it. We take pictures and that’s about all the memory we use. She still uses her ipod for music and neither of us download videos or movies so it shouldn’t be an issue. We also use wifi almost all the time.

My husband has the Samsung Galaxy 3 and my son has the 2. At Thanksgiving the 3 was going for free to $25 depending on the carrier. My husband prefers Blackberry for the keyboard, but it was just time to make the jump. My son convinced him to go with the 3 instead of the iPhone, although daughter and I thought he would be better with the iPhone as he has used mine at time.

While my husband likes his new phone ok, he really would be happier with a BB again; he just hates learning new technology  I did all of the set up on his phone and think it is a very nice phone, just too big for my hands and pocket! If I am wearing jeans, I like to keep my phone in my back pocket so I can feel it vibrate; I could not do that with the Galaxy. If you are a woman and keep your phone in your purse, you might like this phone.

Dang–current price on the Galaxy3 is $149 at Costco.com & comes with free activation & some accessories. No free or $25 phones now, you even have to pay for the Galaxy2. I’m irked with the kids because they are so indecisive and only FINALLY decided we should get iPhones. S & D did want unlimited data, so they chose Sprint. S does a lot of travel & has a lot of dead time on the road. D will as well, which is par for cinema. I don’t want to pay for data overages.

Ironically, we all have phone service except for S. For some reason BestBuy couldn’t port his number over, even though they were able to port mine & D’s with no problem. H got a new number & we are able to keep his old pre-paid phone going. We will have to go to BestBuy in person to try to figure out why they’re having so much trouble porting S’s number over.

Only NOW, that we have the phones in our hands is D thinking she might prefer Galaxy3 (which her friend has). She was thinking that it’s voice activation is better than iPhone5. BestBuy says we have until TODAY (3 days after initial purchase) to cancel Sprint with them. If we will just switch to another phone & stick with them & Sprint, they say we have 14-30 days, depending on whom I talk with. We will be deciding soon, because S leaves to go back to LA on Jan 7 & D shortly thereafter.

In terms of taking care of phones, I drowned one (which S was able to reconfigure with another dead phone to make one working phone). S had one stolen and D had one stolen. Both kids left their respective phones unattended in public places & said phones were subsequently stolen. We have never broken any phones, though D does note that I have a tendency to drop them.

I really like the feel of the iPhone and feel it would be a pity to put it in a case. For replacement phones, historically we have always been able to get an old phone from a relative or S buys on eBay.

I’m leaning toward NOT buying a case or insurance. Will see what the kids say.

I don’t use a case and don’t have insurance and haven’t had any problems.

Have heard that the new iPhone5 seems able to withstand drops from waist and lap with no significant damage. It is drops from chest, shoulder and higher that seems to cause damage. Personally, I am not interested in buying a case and we tend to self-insure just about everything (except major medical & liability), including travel & our possessions. Our credit card will give us a free extra year of warranty also, which should get us through two years, which is the duration of the contract with Sprint.

I have been around plenty of people who experienced water damage on the iPhone and were PLAINLY out of luck. The insurance is not applicable. People who report a trade or exchange might not disclose they had to extend their contract.

Apple is simply not in the business of replacing phones that got wet. Pretending the stores will gladly do it for a minimal fee is pure BS.
