[Where, when, and how to buy the iPhone 5 | Apple - CNET News](http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-57511580-37/where-when-and-how-to-buy-the-iphone-5/)

Traditionally Apple customers have been able to reserve a new iPhone or iPad through the Apple Store app on an iOS device. It’s unclear thus far if reservations will be available for the iPhone 5.

AT&T just announced it will also take part in the online preorder frenzy. Customers can visit Apple iPhone: New iPhone 14 | AT&T to preorder on September 14 or visit an AT&T retail store on September 21. A specific time wasn’t given for the preorder, but I have reached out for clarification and will update when I hear back.

Sprint is allowing online shopping at 3:01 AM EST on September 14.

Still waiting on when Verizon will do online ordering. Apple hasn’t specified when online ordering will begin.

Anyone staying up to order at 3:00 AM?

Do you folks think that this will be a big hit?

Most of the features of the iphone5 appear to be catching up with adroid phones. Apple is finally getting a bigger screen. It’s lighter and thinner like several Android phones. It now works on LTE but several Adroid phones have been working on LTE since Verizon started offering it several months ago. Android has had voice texting and voice search for quite some time but it has not had SIRI which Apple has but other phones do not. The earpod looks interesting, however.

Sales projections are 333K units per day.

There are folks like me that have never had a smartphone and this wouldn’t be a bad place to start. I spoke to various people at work and most were waiting for their plans to expire before upgrading but most plan to upgrade.

There are those that want the latest and greatest and pay for it. I have some [wealthy] relatives like that. I imagine that there are a lot of young adult professionals that will buy one too.

So I expect it to do well.

Siri is interesting. I use her to call, to make appointments, to set my calendar. She is an infant; give her a few years and it is definitely the future.

I have been with most Apple products since the 80s and it has been one interesting ride.

Hmmm. I really want an iPhone. But the one who we will get it for is DD who is returning from two years in Africa and really does need a phone. If she is willing to pay for the data plan, we will put her back on our family plan and get her the 4GS.

thumper1 - after 2 years in Africa, she deserves a 5.

I deserve the 5!

Android has Skyvi, the android version of Siri.

I agree, this just seems like it’s playing catch up to what’s already been on the market for quite some time.

Pretty sure Android’s answer to Siri is Google Now, not whatever Skyvi is. (Given, Google Now isn’t exactly like Siri, but in many ways, it has much more functionality).

I’m trying to figure out whether it’s better to pre-order form ATT or Apple. Which will be faster.

This is my dd’s deferred high school graduation present. She’s limping along at college with my old 3g. I predicted she’d be unhappy today if she had leapt at the 4S.

I plead guilty to standing on line for the iPad 2, but I already have a phone so I’ll order online.

Life is complicated enough–I’m a PC (posting this with my 5 year old
Toshiba) not a Mac–so I admit I appreciate that the phone just works.

The other day I sat down at long table at a Starbucks on the edge of a major Ivy. I counted 8 laptops at the table, all Apple.

Yes. The 4s was a big hit, and that wasn’t as big of a change. Last hear, if you didn’t order immediately, it meant having to wait weeks to get it.

I’d order from Apple online, not AT&T.

I’ve had an iPhone since they came out. This doesn’t impress me, with all the other fantastic phones coming out now. I’ll probably wait for a Windows 8 phone to go along with the Surface I’ll probably be getting soon. Sorry Apple, but there’s nothing special enough to make me want it

I’m trying to figure out if this is the biggest product launch ever. Not adjusting for current versus past dollars - and thus excluding the Model T, etc. - we’re talking about a phone that may sell 100 million in a year. The average price will be probably around the middle, so say $400 - but I don’t know what it would work out to globally. Do the math: 400 * 100 million = $40B in one year. I know these are rough numbers: I don’t know how many of what kind of iPhone are sold and I know that Apple’s numbers for one quarter in 2012 showed they got a whopping $600 per phone while I used subsidized selling price to consumers. It may work out: the mix of iPhones and the whole price Apple gets may come out to $40B or more, but I can’t see how much of that is the new phone. I don’t have the patience to get into the financials to see if that info is there.

The Model T is my first thought for most valuable product launch, though only if we add together many years and thus many models of the Model T. We’d need to compare all iPhones to that, so I’m not sure there is a single product launch which makes so much money. Maybe a plane because they cost so much, but they don’t generate that much in profit. Today may have been the single biggest profit announcement in history.

It’s sort of freaky. A few years ago the iPad didn’t exist and within 1 year it was a bigger business than all of Dell. Now it dwarfs nearly all other tech companies in any field and it is dwarfed by the iPhone.

This phone will sell through the roof. I’ve used the large Android phones. They’re too big for the hand and the idea of a stylus is just plain idiotic for the mass market. The iPhone had a 3.5" screen because that was how your thumb could reach. They’ve tried to keep that by stretching the screen, so you can slide your hand and reach the entire screen without using 2 hands, without stretching uncomfortably.

The iPhone is the single largest camera in use. The numbers reported by the photo services - from Facebook to Instagram, etc. - show utter dominance by the iPhone. This shows in the amount of attention Apple pays to the camera and the associated software.

I noted the remark that the average iPhone user now has a huge number of apps. True. They’re sometimes forced on you: need this app to listen to this radio station, access this journal, etc. But there are also so many apps that do amazing things. And because Apple tends the garden - the walled garden reference the Android community uses as a negative - the quality of the apps tends to be very, very good. There is a reason the Touch is the biggest gaming platform: the apps are cheap and really fun.

“The other day I sat down at long table at a Starbucks on the edge of a major Ivy. I counted 8 laptops at the table, all Apple.”

Try a Starbucks in Redmond - not a Mac in sight.
Although plenty of PC club members have iPhones.

Most people pay extra for the perceived prestige of owning a Mac. It’s just natural you see them at Starbucks paying extra to order a coffee with 10+ syllables in its name.

Maybe all the Windows guys go to Dunkin Donuts.

I don’t know where you get your substantiation for this statement. I know that I use Macs because they excel at what I need for work (lots of audio/visual projects); because they are way less subject to viruses; because they are reliable. I get weary of the reverse-snobbery of windows-vs-mac users. It’s just what works for me.

I have an iPhone 4s and will probably sell it back using Gazelle and purchase a 5. The spoken turn-by-turn directions alone make it worth it for me! And I won’t end up having to pay much at all after selling my phone back to Gazelle.

Preorder through apple not AT&T. We preordered very early through AT&T after the 4s release and waited about 6 weeks to actually get it in my hands. Other stores were getting regular inventory in by that time, we just didn’t happen to catch any in stock.

I want to get one for my wife. Am I right in thinking that you cannot preorder until tomorrow (14th)?
