With previous iPhones theyve had to push back delivery dates and some people ended up canceling online orders and standing in line at the apple store. ( those models also didn’t have the demand as the 5)
A bird in the hand…

I like waiting till products have been out long enough to assess if I really need 3G ( for ipad3) or if I need 32 or 64gb.

That’s AT&T Premier which is related to our company discount. The benefits
are that they waive activation fees, provide discounts on accessories and
provide about a 19% discount on service - the 19% discount is comparable
to Verizon’s discount. I don’t know if Verizon provides discounts and
freebies comparable to all that AT&T provides.

My MacBook Pro has a 17 inch screen with 1920x1200 resolution, 48 GB
SSD where I put the OS and Applications, 1 TB WD HDD where I put data
and everything is backed up via Time Machine to a large, external
drive. I just plug in the external drive and don’t worry about backup.

At work, I plug in two external monitors so I have three displays with
Mac OSX and one Windows display - the two systems are connected via
Synergy so I only need to use one Mouse/Keyboard set to control both
computers and all four windows.

This system is almost five years old. The battery developed a bulge
a few months ago. I brought the computer into the local Apple Store
and they gave me a new battery, no questions asked. Yes, the battery
is removable.

My system developed the industry-wide nVidia graphics problem. I
brought it to the Apple Store last year, told them about it and they
replaced the motherboard. This on a four-year-old system.

I ordered a Retina system but cancelled it because then I’d have to
do something with my old system and there’s nothing wrong with the
old system. Apple continues to provide outstanding and convenient
service and support and the thing just keeps going. BTW, I could add
a third hard disk or SSD by removing the optical drive but space isn’t
a problem. I also have Windows via dual-boot and via Virtual Machine
for those rare times when I need to run Windows.

Does HP provide you with this level of hardware support? I know a lot
of Dell users that screamed about how bad service was on the nVidia
fiasco of getting four or five motherboard replacement over a period
of several years. Some customers received new machines after all of
their frustrations but many wound up with paperweights.

Does your laptop have dual Thunderbolt ports?

We have MacBook Pros going back to 2007. One aspect that I really like
with Apple’s laptops is the external power interface. There is up and
down compatibility with their power adapters - the adapters that we
got five years ago work on current computers and the power adapters
on current adapters work on those computers that are five years old.

I have a bunch of Windows laptops too - they all have different power
adapaters. If I want a second adapter for the office and a third for
one of our other residences, then I’d have to purchase them and they
would be throwaways at EOL.

And yes, the MagSafe is nice. It’s only saved me two times but it’s
nice that it works.

Well, I do Mac OS X development from time to time and having a Mac
handy does make that easier. I’d also like to play around with doing
iOS App development.

I use Linux VMs on my home desktop to connect to the office but I just
do bare-bones stuff on it. I run into font issues with some
applications related to our work environment that I don’t have with
Mac OS X. Yes, I suppose that I could spend five or ten hours figuring
it out but it’s nice that Mac OS X just works in that area.

BCEagle91, just gonna say you have a good Mac store near you. My brother had one of those AC adapters that started smoking and nearly started a fire (laptop was probably less than 2 years old), and they asked him if he wanted to use debit or credit to pay for a new one.

Well… DS#1 has ordered one but it has to be delivered to the billing address… which is our house. Hmmm… wonder if he really thinks we’ll turn around and send it to him??

Yes, I know we need the matching (ie his) sim card to do the upgrade… but…

Geekbench score for the iPhone 5 is 1601. It was 629 for the iPhone 4S and 766 for the iPad 3. For comparison, the Google Nexus 7 gets 1591 (it’s a quad-core tablet chip), and the Samsung Galaxy S3 (quad-core) is 1560. So Apple now has a dual-core phone that is thinner and lighter and faster than all of the rest of the phones out there, even those with quad-core processors.

Should be interesting for those upgrading from 4S to 5 and their comments on CPU performance.

Not me. I’ve never been comfortable with the idea that Apple knows best. What size display is best, what apps are appropriate, etc. But I realize I’m not typical: I run only Linux and run Rockbox on my only Apple device, a 4-year old ipod.

DS is going to get the 5, but he says he is waiting until the hoopla settles down. We will probably give this to him for his birthday which is in November. Maybe he’ll give ME his old phone!

We preordered one for DS through Best Buy. I will pick it up when it is available but he wont bring it back to transfer the data over (it takes a different size sim card) and activate it until he gets home 3 weeks later for fall break. His old iPhone is the original dinosaur, the 3. He has been due for an upgrade for years but wanted to bypass the 4 and 4s to wait for the 5. I hope it’s a good phone.

For kicks, I played the “track your package” game. The Apple Store is still showing the order as being processed. However, the UPS site has the information in its system. Reminds me how Indians found out about their Harvard Business School admissions!

Anyhow, in my case, the phone is already in the US and is getting a healthy dosis of CW music in the warehouse.

Scheduled Delivery:
Friday, 21/09/2012, by 15:00(by end of day for residential deliveries)
Last Location:
Nashville, TN, United States, Sunday, 16/09/2012

PS Unless UPS or another carrier slips up, it appears that all deliveries will magically start to happen during the night of Thu to Friday. And, fwiw, I am not sure what an early delivery might mean in terms of activating the phone. My take is that it will not be a walk in the park and that delays will be inevitable.

So far no one has complained about the fact that your existing adapter won’t fit the new Ipod. Hey, everyone says Apple is great and I don’t doubt it, but I’m sticking with my Motorola Android for now.

I’ve had to buy adapters for Mini-USB and now Micro-USB. One thing that I’ve found with Mini-USB and Micro-USB is that the metal edges get dented and chewed up with metal on metal action. There can also be a little damage if you try to put it in the wrong way. I need my glasses in order to see which way the plug should go in, especially on the Micro USB.

I don’t own any current specialty devices that use the old iPod dock so this doesn’t affect me but it could for those with car adapters, sound systems, external power systems, etc.

Google ‘kimmel iphone’ and watch on youtube the skit he did.

They interviewed people on the street to see what they thought of the new iPhone and handed over an iPhone to the people to look over and compare it to the current iPhone (the 4S). They received all kinds of comments - “lighter”, “faster”, “brighter”, “heavier”, “nicer looking”, “feels more durable”, “better than the iPhone 4s” they already have, etc. The only problem was that they actually handed them an iPhone 4s since the iPhone 5 isn’t even out yet. It shows people’s perceptions and how wrong they can be.
