Who's watching the Oscars?

“I graduated in 1984.”

You are young. You and terriwtt are babies.

Just commenting on some of the musical performances:

I love Pink and thought she did a great job, but oh how I wish she’d use a stylist. The hair (which is getting old), the pale lip, the hideous dress that belonged on one of the 60+ year old actresses. She looked terrible.

Bette Midler has lost a lot of her voice, no surprise and no shame at her age, but it’s a really bad idea for her to point it up by singing one of her past triumphs. I heard every weakness. And darned if I know how that song served as a coda to the In Memoriam segment, since it’s about being unrecognized by the world but appreciated by one person, hardly the case for the deceased.

Idina. I’m not a fan. She’s a great belter, but horribly nasal when not belting. And tonight she just messed up, period. Couldn’t get to those last notes at all. It didn’t help that I’m sick unto death of the overplayed “Let it Go”, which I think is a mediocre song.

Absolutely adored “Happy”, a great song which Pharrell sang flawlessly. He’s an amazing talent.

I didn’t know the other nominated songs, but they seemed eminently forgettable.

@razorsharp

Cate Blanchett winning was 100% locked since the movie came out in July, and I say that with literally no hyperbole.

Sorry, I havent seen any of Woody Allens stuff since * Manhattan*.
That movie creeped me out.
( ew, apparently with good reason. Allen has admitted the relationship at the core of the movie was based on himself & a student at Stuyvesant High School.)

I saw all of the best picture nominees except for Wolf of Wall Street. I did not think that Sandra Bullock merited a nomination for her performance in Gravity. I think she was in over her head on that one. I thought Amy Adams deserved Best Actress but thought that they would give it to Judy Densch. I did see Blue Jasmine as well. And Osage County.
I often think that the roles that are more subtle get drowned out by the over the top extreme roles like Kate Blanchett’s in Blue Jasmine. (Not that I didn’t think she was wonderful in it)

I thought Ellen was being Ellen, hence a lot of corny bits.

Loved U2 and I thought Bette, Idina and Pink were great (but agree her dress was an unfortunate choice) . I guess I don’t listen to see where they **** up.

Cate, Charlize, JLa, Kate Hudson, Lupita, Jessica Biel were my favorites, but most all the ladies got it right. Didnt love Julia’s dress, Thought Sally Field looks great for her age - Goldie should ask her for some tips. Whoopie was my worse dressed. Could not figure out WTH she was wearing!

Jared Leto needs a good haircut, too.

I watched the red carpet all on E! so need to watch it on ABC. Might add to best and worse after watching.

editing to add to worse dressed - Sally Hawkins. Dress had too much going on for someone so petite. It looked sacky on her and matronly.

Charlize Theron a classic beauty. Still love Matthew McC wife’s dress the the best. The material was perfect for the lines of the dress.

Loved U2s presentation and I am not a U2 fan.

@CSIHIS - just want to give you a shout-out for accurately calling all the big awards but one, I think, and many of the design awards as well, way back on page 2. I’d mention the post number but as we all know, that’s no longer possible. But good work! I’d never have guessed Spike Jonze myself for original screenplay.

What about Meryl Streep’s performance? Did it merit the accolades, or is it now just habit to nominate her every year?

I thought Julia Roberts’ dress choices for the awards season were awful.

Pharrell looked ridiculous on the red carpet in a Bermuda shorts tux and his interview with Ryan Seacrest was very awkward.

Matthew McC’s wife’s dress was beautiful indeed.

I hadn’t known before tonight that Brad Pitt was involved with 12 Years a Slave as a producer.

Her performance was somewhat controversial - some major critics even panned it. <a href=“Will 'Osage County' pans hurt Meryl Streep's Oscar chances?”>http://articles.latimes.com/2013/dec/27/entertainment/la-et-mn-august-osage-county-meryl-streep-oscar-voting-20131227</a></p>

For me, she can do no wrong. But I’m glad Cate Blanchett won this time.

Haven’t read this whole thread but in case this wasn’t mentioned, a nice Oscar touch by Ellen:
https://www.thedodo.com/ellen-degeneres-donates-10000--444818596.html</a></p>

Everyone’s a winner at the Oscar’s, but this year that’s especially true for shelter animals. Thanks to Ellen DeGeneres, a vocal animal welfare supporter and the host of this year’s Academy Awards. The 2014 Oscar gift bags will contain a 10,000-meal donation from DeGeneres’s all-natural pet food company, Halo, Purely for Pets. According to the Halo blog, the company has partnered with Freekibble.com in order to help 20 non-winning Oscar nominees help animals:

The Halo and Freekibble.com gift makes a notable departure from the typical expensive gift bag products geared toward leisure time and pampering and taps into the penchant of many celebrities for giving… With this in mind, the 10,000-meal donation to the animal rescue or shelter of the recipient’s choice is one of the most expensive items in the gift bag, a $6,100 retail value.

“We know many celebrities are extremely generous,” said David Yaskulka, Halo’s vice president of marketing communications. “So we decided to gift them with something different that we think will mean a lot to them. We’re looking forward to making those donations!”

Hampshire College alums earned two Oscars - the campus is all abuzz! Lupita Nyong’o for best supporting actress and Jonathan kitzen for best documentary short. I too thought Ellen was just being Ellen - the pizza delivery was hysterical.

^^^^^In reading the day-after reviews, it seems a lot of the stuff I found to be cringe-worthy actually went over pretty well with many people. Apparently, a lot of people found the pizza thing to be a riot.

And Julia Roberts made the best dressed lists!

Looking through them again, I think my favorites might actually be Amy Adams’ and Jennifer Lawrence’s dresses. Or maybe it’s just the way they wore them.

I bet these ladies were so happy to get into their t-shirts and sweats when it was all over with.

I was trying to see if the pizzas had any meat on them. I hope not but it was difficult to tell with one of them.

I remember when Ellen gave away her adopted dog.

^^^^^She gave it to a loving family. When it all came out, she was devastated that the dog was taken back by the shelter and that her actions were misconstrued. It’s not like she left the dog in an alley.

I hope someone interviews the kid who delivered the pizzas. Talk about unexpected! I enjoyed the dresses as well but as someone who’s at home in jeans and a sweater, I was thinking the same. And what the heck was Whoopie wearing???

Overall, this was not a stellar year for the Academy Awards presentation. The big winners, I thought, were pretty easily predictable, but the show seemed very, very off somehow. Some nice moments but mostly extremely underwhelming. Maybe, it always is. Not sure.

Ha ha, no kidding. It was kind of funny when she got people to throw in their cash. She dinged Brad Pitt twice.

I think Ellen’s hysterical and did a nice job. I was thinking back on previous years when they had Anne Hathaway (who is very likeable) but that show was just so awkward. I kept wondering about greasy pizza and those beautiful dresses.

I have always thought Ellen was a little off. Her timing, her antics just a little off, a little bit quirky. . That, however, is what makes her “Ellen” .

I think she set the tone. Not bad, not good, just “Ellen”.
