Why a student from California need to apply to U-M (university of Michigan)

The thread “would you have done it” have gone on a wrong track with U-M students/advocate taking it personaly.

So to clarify the stance: I would like to know what on the earth provide a good reason for student from California to apply to U-M forget considering joining.

It has a strong engineering program?

Stronger than UCB

Well I would apply there too? l0l…

Ross B-School, stronger than Haas…Go Blue!

Or how about if you don’t like California??? Or really like Michigan???

Or gasp actually like the school?

yeah wahts the point of this thread ?

What about having a choice? What if they don’t know they are getting into UCB??

The list goes on and on l0l…

US-News ranking for Engineering

U-M - 9

while

UC-B - 3
CIT - 7
USC - 7
UC -SD - 13
UC- LA - 16
UC - SB - 19
UC-D - 34.

What will be the reason to apply to U-M once again

Oh I’m sorry you didn’t mention that you are 1-dimensional and consider rankings as the only valid method of comparison.

It seems that I’m really talking to people who defy logic.

The point is given so much abundance choice in UC at < 10K in tuition why any one will like to apply to U-M to pay > 20K in tuition.

I think what he’s trying to get at is that many UC’s are on the same level as Michigan for 1/4 of the price. Why would anyone choose Michigan …

In the other thread YOU were comparing Brown and UM.

I said in the other thread I would pick UM over Brown for Engineering.

Also, what if you don’t get in to Berkeley or CIT? There is no harm in applying to UCB, CIT, USC, UM and then deciding after you get your results?

^^^ Welcome to those who “defy logic” :D

Perhaps…they want to get away from mommy and daddy in California for a few years of their life? They don’t want to go to the same school as their friends? They want to experience 4 seasons of weather? They get a great scholarship from UMich or private organization and it negates the difference in tuition? They want to experience Big 10 athletics? They want to go to a school that’s nationally known in more than one sport? They enjoy the Midwest? They don’t want to go to school with a bunch of people who are concerned about rankings? Or they don’t want to go to school with kids whose parents are overly concerned with rankings?

Can anyone post how many students from California actually attend U-M at the undergraduate level as that will put end to this discussion one way or the other.

I guess you really can’t believe there may be other reasons besides money and ranking to apply to an institution?

So now you wan’t to end the discussion?

So ParentOfIvyHope, What colleges are you “recommeding” for your daughter?

Let me take a wild stab in the dark.

This is where I think she is planning on Applying

She wants to major in Comp Science and minor Pre Med as she would like to go for Medicine.
