The plain answer is that to many people following the immigration laws does not matter, citizenship does not matter and the country’s borders should be open to all with no limits, no laws and no rules.
@GMTplus7 . I think your comment of: “whether people without legal immigration status should even be in the country” is very appropriate here. US institutions like Yale that admit and fully fund illegals are basically incentivizing illegal immigrants that come here at least partially in the hope that the USA will fund their children’s education and other needs.
You are implying that undocumented students receiving aid are dishonest when it comes to incime and asset reporting.
Yale financial aid is well versed on how the financial aid application form is completed (would be the Profile only for students who are not citizens). It’s not like Yale is awarding aid for the first time this year.
@twicearound – and then there’s this:
https://news.vice.com/article/unauthorized-immigrants-paid-100-billion-into-social-security-over-last-decade
What exactly is your concern?
These undocumented students are receiving institutional need based or merit aid…not federally funded need based aid. The colleges can award THEIR money any way they choose to. These are deserving applicants with either financial need or high merit (for schools that give merit aid) or both.
@thumper1 . Illegal immigrants, legal immigrants, or citizens are dishonest if they do not report their income
to the US government. A question for you - why should I as a citizen of the country where the institution is located have to provide a tax return and a profile, while an illegal immigrant living and working in the USA has to provide only a Profile?
I’ll ask another question? There are international students who come from countries where there are NO tax returns. None. They don’t have to provide returns either. Do,you have an issue with that also?
If you think it is such a cake walk to be an undocumented student applying for college here…I would suggest you give up your citizenship here yourself…and see what it’s like.
@thumper1 .
No I don’t have an issue with international students not providing a tax return. No doubt they are full-pay !
It just means Yale chooses not to consider residential status as a pre-condition for admission and financial aid. If tomorrow the law has changed and says universities cannot admit illegal immigrants’ kids, I think most likely Yale will comply with the law. Before that, Yale chooses to treat them as any other students from all around the world applying for admission and financial aid to their institution.
There are plenty of international,students who are not full pay.
I think you’re coming at this from the wrong perspective. These are obviously kids with tremendous potential. They are a resource and an asset to this country. It’s absolutely in the best interests of the United States to make sure they get a good education which leads to a great job… not only for what they will contribute in terms of their work (new technologies, medical research, public service?) but for what they will contribute in terms of tax revenue. Denying them that education and sending them off to work at the local car-wash or meat-packing plant or what-have-you would be a tremendous waste that benefits no one.
@mainlinePenn – No need for your daughter to ride on this young woman’s coat tails.
Get her to be a valedictorian with a zillion AP credts – 17 AP courses!! – and a 4.95 GPA and she might get in on her own merit. Certainly as a Maine Liner, your daughter has enjoyed privileges an undocumented Texan wouldn’t dream of
@Marigrow once more…with vigor. An American citizen with financial need will,get the same need based aid as a non-citizen or undocumented student with the same need who is acceoted at Yale.
How many ways can you say it, OP? You don’t like them and think they should go home. But greater minds than ours have decided these kids, after years in the US, deserve a chance to reach their potential.
Yale isn’t crowding out other high quality kids when they admit these. There are very few who reach that tier. And Yale is operating legally.
@mainlinePenn, Do I PERSONALLY know how many AP credits she earned? No. Only what was widely reported in Texas papers, New York Times & Washington Post. Oh and by the way, you’re a little mixed up. The young woman who said she had nice legs is going to UT, not Yale. You want your daughter to follow the Yale one, right? Easy peasy: all she needs is a stellar academic record and a heck of a lot of courage.
I always get bummed out when someone decides to make a negative, pointless thread like this one
^I hear you.
@mainlinePenn since when do valedictorians disclose their test scores during their speeches? A teenager tweeted so now she is attention seeking? I guess all of our kids are. Some might say your screen name is attention seeking. Let me guess, you are rich and live on the mainline? Got it. And why shouldn’t they be proud of their heritage. The USA is a country of immigrants. Most people I know are proud of their cultural backgrounds. Easy to judge Mexican immigrants from the mainline I suppose.
Except this thread is not pointless. It discusses an important topic–immigration policy, college acceptance, and tuition assistance. It is more negative than I like, however, from both sides.
