Why do colleges hate the "B-" student?

By “B-”, I’m referring to a GPA between 2.5 and 2.99! I’m one of those people who has a “B-” average and I think that a B- is pretty good if you ask me!!! Why do colleges hate that?

Why do think?

You tell me! I’m waiting for you to say!

What types of colleges?

Mostly flagship universities! The ones I’m interested in accept 60-80% of their applicants!!!

Flagship Us are flagships because they are trying to attract the top students in the state. Do you think a B- student is in that pool? If you didn’t do well enough in HS you can start at a directional U or CC and then transfer to the flagship. Your resume will list where you graduated.

Well I’m thinking about applying anyway and if I don’t get into any of them! Then I will go the transfer route!!

They are not as promising as the A+, A-, A, or B+ or B student. I don’t think they hate B- students, they would just much rather a higher achieving student.

If a large state flagship (that a lot of students want to attend) can attract A and B+ students, why do they need the B- student? A B- isn’t bad-- it’s not the end of the world, but when colleges can have their pick of the top students in the state, a B- simply isn’t good enough compared to all of the A and B+ students out there who want that same spot.

They like them better than they like the C+/C/C- student… But I think it is because at many high schools, a B- is a “just barely scraping by” grade. Colleges will forgive a couple of them, IMHO. But a consistent set of them means either you (1) don’t have the ability to get a higher grade, or (2) don’t care enough to work hard for a higher grade. Colleges want to admit people who will be successful in their environment. College is often harder than high school. So… they will usually take the students who did better/worked harder in high school.

Damn…is there anything I can do to improve my chances though?

Yes. Improve your grades.

I think it’s too late for that…I’m already a junior and even if I get straight A’s for the rest of the year, I will still be below a 3.0!

Then you need to reset your expectations. A lot of colleges will see the potential in a B- student. Plus, even showing an upward trend in your grades between now and when you apply will demonstrate that you are willing to work as hard as you can to get into a decent school.

What colleges would see potential in a B- student? Give me some names! That would be helpful plz!

Why don’t you start with the search tool on this site? Enter your grades and test scores and other constraints, then see what you come up with. If you offer a list I am sure people would be happy to supply their feedback.

Alright thanks Sally!

Hypothetical situation for you Bezan: You’re on the hiring committee of a hospital. You have 2 vacancies for your residency program. You have 6 applicants. One has immaculate credentials, top GPA, rec letters. Two are very good as well, equal credentials. And you have 3 who are in the bottom 5th of their graduating class – grades, recommendations reflect that. You offer the positions to top guy and one of the others. Top guy turns you down. You offer the position to the 3rd applicant. 2 & 3 accept the job. 4,5 and 6 accept other jobs in your town.

Your mom needs to see a doctor and doc #6 is in her neighborhood, very convenient. Do you tell her to go see doc #6? Or do you tell her you’ll pick her up and bring her to see 2 or 3?

C’mon.

Bs used to indicate above-average achievement, but with all the grade inflation in American high-schools, Bs are now just average.

Bezan, there are plenty of schools that are interested in B- students. Are finances an issue for you and your family, in terms of paying for college? Or can you apply anywhere?

Do you do well on standardized tests or will those be problematic for you?

Believe me, there is no reason you cannot go to a very fine big state U if that is what you want.

ETA: are you a boy or a girl? If you are a boy and test well, many of the heavily female dominated LACs might be interested in you, if you wanted somewhere smaller.
