Thanks Warts. :)

It is true- open discussion is what usually leads to revelations and it doesn’t put a band-aid over problems.

I am going to try to put this in more eloquent terms, without a rant. Stay tuned.

“You guys, I’ve been so sick. Please feel bad for me.”

Oh wow, no apology? That could be the difference between nobody caring and nobody caring. What a big blow to team mentally-stable.

I think that a lot of your posts can be paraphrased as this:

“Hey guys, look at me! Over here guys! Look at me! Look at my cool experiences! Guys? Over here guys! LOOOOOOOK AT MEEEEEEEEEEEEE!”

No.

Less ranty: (but the reason behind my rant).

America is a very closed society. We prefer to push things under the rug and ignore them rather than admit they are there. Example- racism. If it’s OK to joke about it then it doesn’t exist, right? Wrong. And we all know that. However, we make it a joke and we make light of it so that we don’t have to “deal” with it.

The problem is that we then take those jokes and slowly, as is our nature, push them to the extreme until they become true. We slowly took the joke of the “emo kid” and slowly pushed it to the edge of those kids being attention whores who bring all their problems upon themselves.

I for one am SICK of this stereotype. It is personified in this thread and that is what set me off. As someone who has dealt with depression her whole life, I can firmly say that it is one of the most mis-understood mental diseases in this country and this is exactly the reason why.

Obviously, no one would make fun of the amputee or the leper to his/her face because it is a physical deformity that we can all see and mourn over (or whatever the case may be). But it is perfectly acceptable in American society to laugh at and ostracize people with mental afflictions- depression, mental retardation, etc etc. It’s just not right. And it set me off (which, I will admit and have always admitted, is not hard to do).

Ok, I think that’s all done now. Tear me apart if you want- it’s whatever.

^
Except that you missed the point of the thread. It’s about cross country being extremely painful, and has almost nothing to do with people cutting themselves.

^ding ding ding we have a winnar

That was pretty offensive. And not at all funny. From now on I shall attempt to refrain from making poor jokes about things I do not do. I apologize.

And to everyone: Please stop all the hate.

Edit: ^,^^Except that Romani was responding to the unfunny joke I made.

my friend used to do this after this chick denied him, he was an idiot but he just chills now

but i agree wit the 4 guy even though it is COLD

Gypsy/Romani, aren’t you in college now?

I have to second Roman.

This a subject I’m not touching.
For somebody to even consider harming themselves and rationalize that it’s alright or they deserve it – this person is not okay and is seriously hurting.

I briefly had an internship in an in-patient hospital for teens and younger with depression and the vast majority of them cut (or harmed themselves in some other way like burning themselves), were/are suicidal and had traumatic events in their past ranging from rape to physical abuse.

People tend to (ignorantly) assume that those who resort to cutting are just little angsty emos who are bitter about whatever – when in fact most cases are far deeper than that.

However, it’s an understandable assumption. Someone who cuts isn’t likely going to wear a sign that says “I was raped/abused/molested.”

While I’m not the most compassionate person, I’m not about to make fun of someone in that amount of pain.
