Why do some ppl who did not get into ivy leagues criticize them so harshly?

yeaaaaaaaa

http://youtube.com/watch?v=JWzQV2uZBWs

University of… Wharton?

“most ppl criticize cuz they can’t get in or they tried nd they were rejected. but, i also know of ppl criticizing cuz they can’t afford it. so, basically everything tht makes the ivies so great is also y ppl hate them”

But you also forgot some people really don’t care about the ivys. Then others criticise these people as those who can’t get in or can’t afford and so on when in reality, the ivys just don’t float the boat. Placing value on something doesn’t mean everyone gives it the same value.

Good luck at your school. You’re probably a fine person going in and you’ll be a better person coming out. If that turns out to be the case, then your education was worth it.

OpiefromMayberry:
if u dont care about the ivies, then u still shouldnt criticize. i mean the ivies have great programs. i understand tht the ivies r not 4 everyone, but if they’re not 4 u then u shouldnt say tht they’re bad because they r right 4 someone. i’m just trying 2 clarify wht i was saying.

If people hate on you because you get into an ivy, just use it against them. Because thier ideas of these colleges will never change so praise that idea you got into a better college than they did. (becuz u work hard for it and dont let anyone but you down!)

“if u dont care about the ivies, then u still shouldnt criticize”

no disagreement, but it is a two way street.

I did not say they were bad, just not my cup of tea. I believe any college enhances the person if it’s the right fit. Doesn’t matter if it’s podunk U, if that’s where your going to be your best…cool.

I worry some kids end up at a name, rather than a college. They haven’t really worked on the fit and then even the best college will be a bad experience because the two (student and school) aren’t a good match.

sounds like some dating service lol

“sounds like some dating service lol”

To paraphrase Yoda… “it is, it is.”

lol yoda is the dude

I remember after I got into college, my French teacher decided to announce it to the class. One boy in the back just saw back, crossed his arms, and grimaced. When I jokingly asked him why, he expressed general blanket disapproval of ivy league colleges. I mean, c’mon. Then I had to make a jab at him of course: “So Colgate is so much better?” Don’t knock it just because you can’t get in. ;)

This is all said in jest, of course.

This is just people being stupid *******s… they are jealous and the people who engage in such criticism are usually people who know they don’t have a snowball’s chance at an elite university…

Just quietly laugh at their “fault-finding inferiority”… and ignore them!

I agree 100% with coolatroopa!

"This is just people being stupid *******s… they are jealous and the people who engage in such criticism are usually people who know they don’t have a snowball’s chance at an elite university…

Just quietly laugh at their “fault-finding inferiority”… and ignore them"

This certainly proves your point? :)

I think that people like coolatroopa and xtopher333 are the reason why ivies get this rep. That is the definition of a superiority complex. The original poster seems very well grounded, but you have to realize that 90% of the rich snobs go to darmouth and harvard and other ivies. They can afford it. i think the jealousy argument may be true, but that is also just adding to the “we’re better than you and we know it”. You also have to realize that people may have had personal experiences with elitist buttholes who have major superiority complexes and who go to ivies.

also, the title of this thread is another reason. You automatically assume that you are just better than the people who don’t get in or assume the people who critize you are stupid or even applied to an ivy league. the fact you dont realize you have a superiority complex makes you worse than the stuck up rich kids.

wait am sorry matteisn i dont see the connection between the title of the thread and the denial of superiority complex…please explain

The only thing I have to criticize is the fact that you guys think that your chicken scratch deviate “English” is acceptable usage from college-bound young adults.

Gah.

its the INTERNET Y DUZ DAT MATer (notice my superfluous use of “deviate english”)

First of all note the qualifier “usually”… not always!
I’m not assuming anything… I was saying that most of the people who set out to criticize Ivy League schools usually view the Ivies as “superior institutions”.
The only thing which is making Ivies so hard to get into is the fact that their reputations are so good… more people apply, a smaller percentage get accepted.
“Fault-finding inferiority” was meant to be a sarcastic jab…but seriously ignore people who make fun of your school JUST to put you down!
Many people such as the “loser football player” in lingbo’s post criticize people who go to Ivy Leagues on the pretense that the Ivy Leaguer automatically thinks that he or she is better than everyone else. lingbo didn’t say anything that should have made the “loser football player” feel inferior, the “loser football player” was annoyed at lingbo’s comment because he viewed lingbo as a “Harvard kid”… no other reason.
People like that are basically saying, “LOOK AT ME! YOU ARE BETTER THAN ME AND YOU AND I BOTH KNOW IT!!!”… not all people who criticize Ivy League schools are like this, but a high percentage are.

Finally on average (just check U.S News) 50% of Ivy Leaguers receive financial aid from these schools. Ivy Admissions will do their best to make sure that financially disadvantaged brilliant students are able to attend their colleges. Since the stereotype “rich snob” is negative… it can be said that people who say “Everyone that is an Ivy Leaguer is a rich snob!” has a superiority/inferiority complex. Since the criticism is motivated by feeling of inferiority but it is masked by a “superiority complex”, since the speaker is saying that he/she is not one of those rich snobs who attend one of “them Ivies”.
I think that the OP clearly stated in the title of the thread you reminded us of that the critics are people who “did not get into Ivy leagues”… meaning the OP KNOWS for a fact that these people did NOT get into some of the said schools and then is critical because of that… otherwise the question is making some horribly snobbish assumptions, which may be true…

Why should people who deserve to be at these schools listen and respond to such crap from others?
(From the posts I read… it sounds like these criticisms were NOT from good-humored motives… inferiority complex or not, it is still insulting.)
I think they have a right to simply ignore and dismiss their comments as superficial and unimportant to their lives, which is something, I believe, the OP should do.

Blakkfire, the reason there is a correlation is that the title is saying that everyone is jealous of me because I got into an Ivy League school. its essentially saying that only people dumb enough to not get accepted to an Ivy League would critize it because they are just bitter.

It correlates because the entire thread is about “Why do people think that we are all stuck up rich snobs who think we are better than you?” and the thread is infact saying, “the only reason you wouldn’t attend an ivy is because you didn’t get in, but i did, so dont be mad at me”

I definetly think that certain people should not be accepted to Ivies, but there are definetly people there who give Ivies a bad name.
