Why does the city of San Luis Obispo not believe in air conditioning?

I am very sensitive to the heat. So much so, that I got heat exhaustion the first week I moved to Cal Poly. I’ve heard that most places in SLO don’t utilize air conditioning because it doesn’t get that hot here. I beg to differ.

Most of the classes on campus aren’t air conditioned, either. Is there anywhere on campus I can go to cool off?

In general, San Luis Obispo tends to be about 10 degrees cooler than So Cal, and is pretty comfortable. My daughters are adjusting to the cool mornings, warm/hot afternoons, then cool evenings (they dress in layers or change clothes during the day) However, I know it is extra hot now, 100+ degrees, since my daughters have been complaining about it. This will not last too much longer. For relief, check out the Rec Center - I believe there are areas inside with air conditioning. And there’s always the pool!

The UU! Anyways, it’ll eventually cool down. It just gets unusually hot the first few weeks of school for some reason.

Just like where I am in Santa Cruz, most of the year there is absolutely no need for A/C. In the summer when it gets a bit warm in our bedroom upstairs, we use a small turbo fan and it works just fine to cool us off.

These extremely HOT days in coastal towns and communities like SLO are short-lived and usually in early fall. Example: Yesterday in my town it was over 100. After three hot days, our temps dropped 40 degrees into the low 60s today. The marine layer came to save the day. I believe it was cooler in SLO than the previous days, as well.

I think most coastal communities think AC is a waste for most the year. Best suggestion is try to take classes in newer buildings as older buildings don’t have good AC.

I bet you’re not asking about A/C now. See how quickly the weather changes!

LOL 2 leashes you’re right on! The weather has (finally) cooled down. I guess I’m just used to Orange County where every building, room, and bathroom has air conditioning in it. I just couldn’t believe Slo reached 103 degrees a few weeks ago. I was told the average temperature here year round is 74 degrees, I have to keep in mind that that is AVERAGE, and not every day temps. Mark my words, pretty soon I will be complaining it is too COLD. Never satisfied…LOL
