Why doesn't anybody tell you?!?!

Just had one. Loved it.

My kids have asked us not to go to parents weekend because they’re too busy to visit. They want us to come another weekend when they can spend some time with us. I’m tempted to go to a parent weekend anyway, just to see what it’s like.

I’ve found the hardest part is when they’re sick. Most of the time it’s no big deal, but occasionally they get overwhelmed and “just want a hug.” I get long phone calls.

One week from tomorrow!

Parents weekend in two weeks. Looking forward to seeing her:-)

Fall break, the last week of October, is when it is recommended for parents to visit where our son is. A grandparent has chipped in to help make it feasible for us to fly over there (across an ocean) to see him. So we’ve got a month to go, still…

We are going to parent’s weekend in 2 weeks. We are booked to stay 2 nights. Now wondering if we should have just stayed over one night?. Planning to go to a football game with our kid and dinner one night. We probably need to rethink this. It is also alumni weekend so many of the activities that weekend are booked up. Do parents only go to parents weekend the first year and never again? Now looking back I don’t think my parents ever came to see me for parents weekend when I was in college.

I can’t afford the travel for parents’ weekend. I’d love to go since D has a concert with several solos.

I went to parent’s weekend when D was a first year. Enjoyed it, did some activities (attended concert, reception for parents, president’s speech). Had dinner with her roommate’s family.

This year I am going a different earlier weekend for various reasons. D’s workload, it breaks up the time between when she left and Thanksgiving better, parent’s weekend is also Halloween weekend. I’ll pay less for my place to stay that weekend too, I’m sure.

My sons college only did Parents weekend for freshmen. It was great. Learned so much. Someone asked why her kid had discussion group at midnight, and the answer was that the 5 midnight classes were so full they added more late sessions, while morning classes had few enrollees. I also met a local mom, who invited son and me to her house for T-day. Her son became friend to my son over the 4 years. I felt more secure knowing that, in a crisis, I could call on her. Fortunately, that wasn’t necessary.

I had a rental car, so we spent an afternoon buying son lots of big, expensive items (monitor, chair, couch).

It’s a cross country trip so parents weekend is out. I did go a little overboard for Thanksgiving though. Rather than fly her home, we are all going out to see her. We’ve rented a house for the week. She naively asked me “so…can I stay in the house with you’all over the break?”

She appears to be enjoying her independence. I will admit to a little Life360 snooping from time to time just to see where she is. I am trying to break the habit. Trying.

What is this Life360 you are talking about? Please explain

It’s a locator app for your phone.

Our whole family is connected on Life360 - and I love it. I don’t think of it as snooping - b/c I am not trying to monitor or change what D (or Husband) is doing. But I do like to know that she is home safely. (D is studying abroad… with the 5 hour time difference her 2 am is my 9:00!) Especially since I won’t get to see her for 86 more days…

If your family members know you are using it and are ok with that, then fine if it works for your family. Otherwise, just no.

And what are you going to do if she isn’t where you think she should be? How is it not monitoring?

Oh ok not interested in that. I got a snapcat bc my dd posts everything on there. I like to see what she is doing. I thought life360 was another social media outlet i was clueless on.

@doschicos - not that it is any of your business… but all 3 of us (Husband, me, and kid) are linked - everybody is fine with it. I don’t have any places where I “think” she should be… nor have I ever asked her why she isn’t home yet. (including 2 weekends ago when she was out until 4 am her time). I just like that it pings when she arrives. Helps me sleep with her on the other side of the ocean. Sue me

While I would love to see where my D is, I cannot imagine asking her to do Life360 or even friending or following her or whatever on Snapchat. She would really hate that. Or can you see someone on Snapchat without them approving it?

Reread my post. “If your family members know you are using it and are ok with that, then fine if it works for your family” but yes, it is monitoring by definition of what it is designed to do.

Not as far as I know.

^^And much to my disappointment.
