Can someone give me any idea as to why English is a hard subject for me? I always seem as if I understand math and science easier. By English I don’t mean grammar or learning it, but reading comprehensions and having to answer questions about the reading after reading. No matter how much time I spend or how hard I try, it always seems to give me a hard time.
For me, math/science was always easier because there was usually one right answer. In subjects like English and History, the answers are often more complex than that. That was my experience at least.
If you are talking about SAT English, though, it can seem complex but usually there is a straight forward answer. You just have to learn how to do the problems.
People are different. We each have different strengths and weaknesses. Certain subjects will come easier for some people. And vice versa.
Try improving your spoken and listening language skills. For my kids getting the books on tape or using other reading devices (like an app or pc program) with the digital version of text helped with the heavy reading and comprehension load of Literature and History classes. If you have access to a debate team, youth in government or mock trial teams consider joining to build your skills.
Thank you!!!
My kids were huge readers (in a reading family) from very early in life. They’ve soaked it in over the years, and find English classes and standardized testing in that area fairly easy. The best thing you can do to improve in that area is read. Read, read, read. Read what you like. Try to vary what you read somewhat (not all one genre), but READ. Give your brain more practice at it. Don’t let anyone tell you that you have to read classics (although by all means do so if you like). Read sci fi, fantasy, mysteries, sports, non-fiction, biographies, memoirs, romance, anything you find interesting. Reading will build your vocabulary, and also improve your ability to see patterns and comprehend what you are reading.
