WHy is USC ba/md hard to get in ?

do you guys know what we put for the cumulative gpa? is it unweighted or weighted?

unweighted. it says so on their website somewhere

yah im done.

o shoot, I put in my weighted total gpa on the application…is it okay if I just change it to my unweighted one and then mail in the correction to the admissions office along with my other stuff?

I think they’ll figure it out lookign at what your counselor said and your transcript…hakuna matata

lol, that’s a nice allusion to disney

nice and pretty much accurate…let it all flow, and it’ll all turn out the right way

does anyone know when interview notifications are sent out? and are they via email or post?

Happy New Year future Bacc/MD-ers!

wow that was so corny…

no…not really…Happy New Year!

Hey everyone,

If I go to a private school that has an unweighted GPA, whats the difference between weighted and unweighted?

What would a 3.85 unweighted turn out to be when weighted, if that makes sense? If I’m not mistaken, I’m kind of on the low side for the BA/MD program at USC. How about this other stuff?

HS GPA: 3.85
Senior First Term: 4.111
SAT: 2310
SAt MAth 2C: 790
Sat Bio: 770
AP Calc: 5
AP Latin: 5
AP Bio: Will take at the end of the year.
A lot of research, filmmaking awards, documentary made in Africa, founder and president of a science newsletter at school, etc.

How’s that? Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

the USC app was crazy…I hope I get an interview w/ my 33 ACt

"What would a 3.85 unweighted turn out to be when weighted, if that makes sense? "

I understand what you are asking, but colleges will not figure one out for you. If your school doesn’t weight grades, colleges will not add a weight to certain classes. This DOES NOT mean you are screwed. What it means, is when comparing you to other applicants or “the average applicant” and when deciding whether or not you will be admitted, they will, of course, only look at your unweighted GPA since you have no weighted gpa. However, an A in an AP class will mean more than an A in a regular class. Many schools do not weight grades and the kids still get in if they are just as qualified as others.

What a weighted grade is, is at some schools, AP and honors are weighted so that an A is a 5.0, B is a 4.0, C is a 3.0 and so on and so forth, making it possible to have above a 4.0.
However, these schools also send the applicant’s unweighted GPA.

If your EC’s and test scores are as amazing as you say, I doubt you will have a problem getting into a private school.

However, I would also like to say, that I don’t hear of colleges weighting gpa’s, and when you apply for jobs, they won’t care about your high school gpa.

Although are you speaking of the USC B.A/M.d program? I couldn’t really tell from your post…if you were, thats great, you have a good shot I think and if you weren’t, it probably should have gone in a different thread.

ba/mds do not neccessarily prefer out of staters b/c they have to “pay” more…when a ba/md program shows favor to in-staters, it means that the student living in the general area would have to go through undergrad and med school at the state, also having lived their all their lives, the chances that they will settle down and practice medicine in the state where the ba/md was offered are quite high. I think these type of programs ultimately want to 1. attract top-notch students to their undergrad school for statistics or government funding purposes and 2. to keep these medical students within the state which will improve the states medical centers and probably attract more funding to that university, just my 2 cents, I may be wrong

does anyone know when they let people know about interviews?

I was going to ask the same thing. USC’s BA/MD application date was the same as GW and they’ve already sent out interview decisions.

And I don’t get this about the in state vs. out of state. USC is a private school, everyone is paying the same.

Hey my friend is in the BA/MD program. It is really competitive. About 800 apply each year. They interview about 100 and accept 30.

You need to have HYP-level stats and have medical oriented ECs. Also, you need to approach their essays really well. You have to justify on why you want to be a doctor.

Hope this helps! Good luck to all!

-P.S. I’ll be applying next year!

I, too, was wondering when we hear about interviews.
Has anyone heard back from the program??

I believe the interviews are sent out in early February.
