The last few weeks have been quite hard on me, I have been waitlisted/denied from every single university that I have applied to except for UI. (Even my safeties) I really have no idea about what to do.

I got accepted to University of Iowa but I cant afford it.

Your UW GPA killed you, which obviously means you received bad grades in school. But you’re obviously a smart kid and seem pretty well rounded.

Are you waiting to hear back from anywhere else or are those all the decisions you received? Might I recommend applying to some rolling admissions schools, such as penn state. Apply for summer and your chances will increase too.

But atleast you didn’t get completely rejected by all of them and you still have a chance at the two wait listed colleges. You probably should have applied to a few safeties, but there’s no room for regrets now.

Sorry, it’s a tough break. In the weeks after May 1, there is an official list released about all schools that still have space open. When it comes out, it will definitely be posted here on CC so keep your eyes out for that. In the meantime, try contacting other schools for which your grades would be at the top of the applicant pool and ask them kindly if they’d allow you to apply at this time. Though most deadlines have passed, some schools will allow this, and there’s certainly no harm in asking so contact as many as you need until you find a few that will allow you to apply.

Also, definitely talk to your guidance counselor ASAP. Perhaps s/he has other ideas and/or could help you contact schools to ask to apply to them. Also ask your GC for help in reiterating to the schools you were waitlisted at how much you are interested in them and the wonderful things you could offer them.

When I originally applied, I thought I would have the University of Minnesota to fall back on, unfortunately, things didn’t work out that way. I’ll look into some rolling admissions schools and plan out what my possible options are. I’ll also keep my eye out for that list in a few months. Hopefully by then I’ll have some sort of plan.

Sorry, I just realized my post could be misinterpreted. Definitely look at schools with rolling admissions, but also try contacting schools whose deadlines have already passed. If you are a student who would be at the top of their applicant pool, many times they will still let you apply, and possibly even qualify for merit aid.

UAB gives [big scholarships](<a href=“Error 404 | Not Found”>Error 404 | Not Found) for your stats, but the deadline for the scholarships is long past (December 1). Deadline for applying for admission is May 1. Out of state cost of attendance without scholarships or financial aid is probably around $25,000 per year.

Universities are becoming increasingly selective. 10 years ago, you would have been admitted into most of the schools you applied you save maybe JHU. Today, schools like Emory, Lehigh, Michigan and Wisconsin have become very selective. Students with sub 3.5 UW GPAs are generally not accepted.

Iowa is an awesome university (great college town, welcoming and spirited students, gorgeous campus and excellent academics), but if it is not affordable, the point is moot. I hope you make it into Minnesota. It is by far the most affordable school on your list ($10k cheaper than Iowa) and it is excellent academically.

Some schools worth looking at that are more affordable than, but not quite as good as, Iowa, include the following:

Kansas State University
Oklahoma State Univerity
SUNY (Albany, Binghamton and Stony Brook)
University of Kansas
University of Oklahoma

Those schools’ tuitions are in the $15k-$20k annually.

Get in touch with your wait listed schools. They must have seen something that they liked in your application. You can visit them and meet people in the admissions office and profs in your area of study. Keep in close contact to show your interest. This is how serious intent to enroll is determined. Your GC can also write a follow-up letter stating that you will attend if offered admission.

Fishy post: Lehigh, Emory and JhU are all ED schools…no EA…so how was the Op denied from all three already?

To the OP: you have been given great advice from above posters…definitely look in to some of the lower ranked OOS publics who are still accepting applications…

I also wonder about the list in terms of OOS cost of attendance with lower stats. U of Wash and Michigan were never in the cards for admission OOS, and certainly would not have been affordable either if Iowa is not.

Look for lower cost OOS rolling admissions schools or start at CC and get grades up.

^^ I assumed those three. I spoke to the admissions counselors from each school and explained my situation. All three basically said my grades were too low to be competetive for their admissions. I have legacy status at JHU and one of the admissions counselor is a friend of my dads and he said that if I had maintained a 3.5, I would have probably been able to get in. Maybe by some miracle they’ll accept me, but realistically, I’m sure that I will be rejected.

Right now, I think that my options are to either take a gap year, or apply to some state schools in Wisconsin, North Dakota, or Minnesota. Minnesota has reciprocity with those three states so tuition won’t be a problem.

As for tuition, my dad said he was willing to pay up to 30k for Ann arbor (not including other expenses). He said he wouldn’t pay for Iowa because theres no point paying that much for a lower level state school.

According to my father, as long as a school is worth the price, he’s willing to pay. He said he would pay for all the expensive schools on my list, except Iowa, because their good schools.

So, you actually have not been denied admission at all of the schools? Did you do research before applying to determine if you were a match? Talking to admissions after you applied, and most deadlines have passed is too late.

^^ yes I don’t understand. You couldn’t have possibly received all of those rejections already unles all of those schools have EA (which I know some do not).

Are you just a worried applicant who feels he might be rejected by all universities, or did you actually get rejected?
