We all have had that blueprint glued into our minds that once we finish high school, we should go to a university. Are there any other reasons to go to university besides getting a higher chance of a better job or pursuing your interests?
Don’t have to read, just my personal say about university/college
I’m currently in a position where I have no motivation to go to university whatsoever. My dreams of pursuing music have been crushed by so many people for a while, and I don’t want to have a job that I’m unsatisfied with for the rest of my life. I want a job that will make me happy. I honestly don’t know what I want to do for the next 50 years or so. I always had it drilled into my head that I’ll study as a music major, but the more I think about it, the more I doubt myself. I’m not 100% sure if I want to be a music teacher, and the only passion I really have that currently keeps me going is music. I really have no interest in other things, and I’m definitely not a genius to go into a high paying job like a doctor or engineer. I just want to hear other people’s thoughts about going to college/university and looking for some motivation. I’m willing to change my perspective about it.
Well, first of all, you’re going to be more stressed if you don’t go to college without and you don’t pursue an ambition in your off time. If you don’t know what you want to do or don’t know if you even want to go to college then enroll in a CC and transfer to a larger school if you find a subject area you like. If music is your true passion then don’t mind what other people say and try your best to pursue a job as a music teacher.
As an adult, my advice is to have a plan and a back up plan.
The people who “make it” are ones that keep going no matter what other say.
But also they learn…either from others, on their own, or through classes.
So what kind of music do you do?
Do you have prospects to do that? Like if you play the cello are you in an orchestra? If you play the electric guitar are you currently in a band?
If not, what will you do if you don’t go to college? Sit around the house and practice? Go on gigs? Work and play at night?
College (or even community college) also gives you a chance to learn more about music theory, take lessons from masters, meet other musically oriented people.
There are performance majors, not just music teachign majors.
Also if you don’t care about anything think about if you have some depression issues.
Some of my friends children have music majors…one does upright Bass at Ithaca and he is all about performance…he does classical and jazz and has the best teachers and many opportunities to perform.
Imagine if you were surrounded by music teachers and students who had the same passion you do.
College teaches you to interact with people
College teaches you to never give up
College teaches you to take advantage of the time you have
College prepares you for real life – it won’t get easier
College allows to make MUCH more money
You can’t be a music teacher without a bachelor’s degree for sure, maybe a master’s.
