Why are college admissions so competitive now?
the magic invention of the internet
- Internet
- Common app
- Baby boomers' kids
- Increase in population in general
Supply and Demand. When there are millions of people wanting to get into a good college to be successful, colleges get to choose who they should let in.
The recent push for college-level education combined with a higher population and burst in students going to undergrad (As MITer94 said, the children of baby boomers are now having their own children graduate high school / attend college). In today’s first world, we’ve had it drilled into our brains since we knew what school was that we HAVE to attend college. Because of that, not too many people decide not to go to college (even when the path they’ve chosen doesn’t require a degree.)
