After all of the snow storm topics this winter, I am surprised that no one is discussing this storm system. It has wreaked havoc from the Gulf states to the mid-lantic states and still raging.
My husband drove straight into it today and thankfully didn’t get caught in the full brunt although he was in the Raleigh NC area when tornadoes touched down. I have a friend in Va who also narrowly escaped the damage. We live in southern coastal NJ and the wind is howling , but our friend who lives about 20 miles west of us lost th roof of his home and a tree crashed through his house …YowZa , it’s a scary day in our region
CT here. It is pouring here…and it’s windy too. Thunderstorms expected also. Bursts of torrential rain.
Betting this is fowling up air travel!
Yikes! It’s rainy and super windy here in New York but not that bad.
We had a good laugh during worship tonight. Just as the liturgist started reading the gospel lesson about the disciples in the boat and a storm starting there was a huge clap of thunder and the rain started pounding on the roof.
We’re supposed to get about a foot of snow and ice here. I didn’t even know about the storms out there until this thread.
Stay safe everyone.
Lots of trees down, power outages and flooded roads here.
Well, I guess it’s just as well my MD grounded us and said because I’m so sick, no flying until further notice. I was supposed to be flying out to see S and a national meeting tomorrow! Best laid plans…
Thunder and lightening in February in Northern New England is NOT normal.
edit: Let me adjust that to SEVERE thunder and lightening! crazy stuff.
Oh no!! Stay safe, everyone.
Lightening is definitely NIT good weather for airplanes! Yikes!
I flew into Newark yesterday amidst thunderstorms and torrential rain. We could see lightening flashes around us, though they said we weren’t actually inside a lightening storm. For sure air traffic was slowed and snarled.
I’ve flown into thunderstorms in Newark many times before, but in FEBRUARY?
We live way out in the country… First thing I did when I woke up was check to see all the roofs on all the outbuildings were intact because I could hear creaking metal all night long amidst the howling winds and the house shook. They seem fine. I spent part of yesterday in the crawlspace under my kitchen with several mummified mice (because I have no cellar) and because my phone kept advising me serious tornadoes were on their way. Next time I’m just going in the under stair’s closet. We have definitely had unusual weather here this winter. I can’t imagine how the farmers will be impacted.
We occasionally have mild thunderstorms in the winter…a few distant rumblings, but NOTHING like what happened here last night !
I haven’t walked around to check things out , but my fence is still standing so my dogs can’t escape. I see a tree toppled out back on the edge of the woods. I was alone, so I have to admit, I was scared
Counterpoint - We had heard that Chicago was going to get a big snowstorm. I flew in last night from FLL to ORD. Chicago had gotten a dusting of snow; roads were clear.
My county in Pennsylvania was the lead story on GMA this morning. We may have had a tornado, but they have to examine the damage to be sure. It occurred in a rural area, so lots of pictures of flattened barns and sheds.
@FlyMeToTheMoon , was it Lancaster County ?
I keep hoping the neighbor’s tree that puts our yard in complete shade will fall down in one of these storms. (We’ve offered to pay to take it down professionally.) No such luck. It was a racket last night but as far as I can tell, just a lot of small branches and a garbage can were responsible. It’s lovely out there today.
Yes. Lancaster county. The paper just posted that 40-50 homes sustained damage. The swath is a quarter of a mile wide and four miles long.
Apparently it’s official. It was a tornado.

We had nine tornadoes roughly between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. That doesn’t include water spouts. We’re used to crazy storms, but tornadoes? Tornadoes in February?
I had a crazy 15 minutes where I hid under the stairs but we were fine.
