I am currently planning my sophomore year schedule and my goal is to get into Columbia university. They say they want 4 credits of a language. I took French 1 freshmen year then I am going to do IB ab initio French junior and senior year. I will technically have 3 language credits but the union program goes thought French 4 and even into ap French. Will it look bad to only have 3 actual credits but have still done the material through ap French. Will it be looked down upon even if I take the ap exam?

I did essentially the same thing my sophomore year–but with German. I took German 1 freshman year, took no German sophomore year, then jumped into Honors German 4 Junior year. It will not be a problem for college admissions. They want to see that you’ve gotten through a high-level (at least 4 years) of a language–not necessarily that you’ve taken four credits worth. In fact, the fact that you are jumping into a higher level of French will show some initiative on your part and may make you even more favorable to college admissions at universities like Columbia. Good luck!

I think you’re fine.
