Will CWL241 be too difficult for an international student?

I am a freshman and only have a SAT writing score of 630. I don’t think I am proficient in English as any ordinary American high school student. But when I was selecting the GenEd courses, I neglected the level of CWL241. Shall I drop it?

Try it out for a week or two, and see if you like it. If you drop it before the “drop deadline”, you’ll can do so without penalty. The only caveat is that you shouldn’t drop below 12 hours. Talking to your advisor before dropping is always a good idea. Just call to set up an appointment.

I found an old, online syllabus for CWL 241, and that class looks brutal. According to the syllabus, you have over 10 writing assignments throughout the semester. Ouch!

Years ago, I took Classic Civ 115 as a gen ed, and I thought that was relatively easy. There were a few essays in discussion group during the semester, but nothing like what I saw on the CWL 241 syllabus.

Basically, for CLCIV 115, if you show up to lectures and take decent notes, you’ll get an A or a B in the class.

Thank you for your replies! If I drop the class, will I find it hard to select another appropriate GenEd course when nearly everyone has finished selecting courses?

BTW The maximum credit hours is 18. Then how can I graduate within 3 years?

1) Don’t drop the course until they allow you to sign up for the other course.

2) You should try and graduate in 4 years. For engineering, it’s not uncommon to graduate in 4 1/2 or 5 years.

When I looked up the professor teaching CWL241 and the class on rate my professor, students give the professor high marks and say the class is relatively easy, so don’t drop it until you check it out for yourself sometimes the number doesn’t mean everything.

I think you’re doing yourself a great disservice if you load yourself down with 18 hours in any semester, much less your first. You’re trying to graduate in three years? Good luck with that.

If you go to the departmental website for CWL, you’ll find a syllabus containing the assignments that are due throughout the semester in this course. The syllabus is old (2005), but if the assignments haven’t changed, then that is a ton of writing for a three hour course.

Classic Civ 115 and Sociology 100 are much easier electives.

Thank you forall of your advises. I had searched the CWL241 on rate my professor and found it highly rated, that’s why I chose it. But I doubt that such high rate may be caused by the so called undercoverage in statistics, because sophomores are more likely to attend such course than freshmen. I have sent two emails to consult my advisor but she hasn’t replied yet. She reminded me to select the 100-level GenEd, but I forgot.

I was at a get together with Illinois students and parents where the question of easier gen eds came up and while the gen eds previously mentioned (100 level) were talked about, they can fill up quickly for this very reason. One other gen ed mentioned that may also be easier to get into was POL 115, intro to Polish Culture. Just a thought.
