will I be treated as an Intl Student or a US student?

Hi everyone

I’ve lived all my life in Switzerland, my nationality is Swiss and I go to a Swiss high school.
Last year, my parents won the green card and therefore I became a US permanent resident.

Do you think the colleges will put me in the international students pool?

For admissions purposes, most colleges will classify you as international. For financial aid, you would not be considered international.

You will be in a different category: US applicant educated abroad.

You will have to provide official records from your high school(s) in Switzerland when you apply to colleges and universities here, and those will probably need to be evaluated by someone from the International Admissions Office. However, because you have your green card, you will be eligible to file the FAFSA, and you can receive federally determined financial aid. Also, after your parents lived in one state for the time required by that state’s public colleges and universities, you will be considered an in-state resident for tuition and fees. In most cases, they will need to live in that state for 12 months.

If you have not finished high school, and you intend to study in the US, it may be best for you to move to the US with your parents, and finish high school here. That will make some of the application process a little bit easier.
