What are my chances of getting into UVa?

GPA will hurt your chances. I’d call it about 40/60 for you.

IS or OOS? (Search “virginia[dot]edu admission by residency” to see how hugely this matters.) I think the difference in the most recent cycle was > 20 percentage points.

I am OOS

2040 SAT is average for UVA. 32 ACT is above average. So you might prepare for and retake only the ACT, as you are unlikely to improve your SAT enough for it to be your best test.

Your unweighted 3.1 gpa is a problem. Your OOS status is also a problem for (UVA, maybe not so much for schools that don’t get as many OOS applications). Your ECs above are neither amazing nor horrible, they won’t separate you from other applicants.

Look at some scatterplots. Collegedata, cappex, parchment, etc. For OOS with an unweighted gpa < 3.5, I don’t see direct admission as a freshman being within reach for you. Last year they got over 22,000 OOS applications and offered admission to only 23% of them. I think they are unlikely to find you are within the top 23% of OOS applicants.

Nothing is impossible in college admissions; maybe admissions officers will find something they love in your application that isn’t apparent above. But if I had to bet real money I’d say no, you won’t get in to UVA. I’m sorry.

You could always take a gap year or two before college, or start somewhere else and apply to transfer after proving yourself with solid grades.

3.1 GPA and OOS will certainly make admission difficult, regardless of potential improvements in standardized test scores. Of course, nothing is impossible; however, you probably need to be highly realistic re your UVa chances.

SAT: 2090 (680 CR, 710 M, 700 W) retaking
GPA (unweighted): 3.92
AP’s: Chem (5) Physics (5) US (5) Environmental (5) Lit (4). Taking BC and Bio this year

EC:
-Loads of volunteer work with the Youth Bureau
-Band & Jazz band (9-12)
-President of NHS
-President of other club
-Ski Team Captain (9-12)
-Track (9-12)
-500+ hours of service
Applying out of state… what do you guys think my chances are?

Hi!
I’m a senior in India, and I’m looking at UVa as one of my top picks for college. My problem is this- I want to apply EA, but my second SAT Subject Test, World History, is now available in December only (I’m giving my first one, literature, in October so that’s not a problem). Will my December scores be considered? Or should I apply for regular decision? Also, does that put me at a disadvantage?

I am a pretty good student.
I’ve taken the SAT only once, 2190 (m:710; cr:760; w:720) but I’m taking it again in November.

We don’t have GPAs here, but my predicted grades are very high:
English: 95%
Sociology: 92%+; I’m lowballing here.
Psychology: around 90%- probably higher.
Economics: 90%
Math: 80% but that was due to me being sick on exam day, they’ll improve by 10% or so in the December evals.

btw, we only have 5 subjects in junior and senior year.
My 10th grade Board marks were also good.

As for my extracurriculars;
-first ever Head of Debates at my school, Badgeholder.
-Founder of Project Vak (a project that helped about 1000 schoolkids between 11-18 years with overcoming the fear of speaking in public).
-Co-founder of the Kalidas Initiative (raised funds- around Rs. 1,00,000- to get children living on the streets into shelters, in collaboration with NGOs)
-Vice-President of Gifting A Smile (raised funds and awareness for & about cleft palate deformities; just successfully funded a surgery- collaborated with Operation Smile, Smile Train, and other big international orgs. Krispy Kreme is a sponsor).
-Executive Board on the TSRS MUN.
-Worked with the Public Health Foundation of India (a govt. body) on their tuberculosis initiative.
-Won the national level Tehelka Foundation Freedom Of Speech Competition.
-Have participated in numerous debates and MUNs- both national and community/school levels, and of oxford, modified cambridge, and parliamentary formats.
-Editor (6 yrs) and Senior Editor (1 yr, obviously ) of the Uncensored Magazine (and on the TSRS Editorial Board).
-Winner of the Triveni Award for lateral thinking.
-Acted in and organised youth productions of ‘Wicked’ and ‘As You Like It’.
-Member of the Sanskriti ‘Youth For Economics’ panel.
-Member of the yearbook committee at my school

 • involved in numerous other school spirit activities and other clubs.

Can’t think of anything else off of the top of my head.
So… what are my chances (even RD)?

Thank you,
Tanya.

@spqr232‌ and @Trohats‌: I am not a moderator, but you might want to post separate threads re your opportunities for of UVa admission, rather than adding to the OP’s (Fergus3’s) thread. As I am sure your’ll recognize, this is likely to reduce confusion for both you and those who respond, and it probably will also provide you with more helpful responses. Frequently, the “What are my Chances?” Forum is used for such posts.

^sure. Sorry about that, I’m new here. Like, made-my-account-this-morning-new.
