Will self-studying AP's improve my chances?

Hi , my parents income is just 4000$ per year , so My question is that will self studying and spending 24000 on 3 AP’s improve my chances? (Phy C:Mech , Chem , Cal AB)

And one more - How to get an internship in a Tech firm in India?

If you get 5’s on them, it would improve your chances. But whether spending 24000 on them is ultimately your personal decision which I cannot comment on. It’s difficult to get an internship at any firm as a high school student, and most students get their internships through connections.

Rich students have so much oppurtunities , but we.

^Exactly mak1702. Especially in India. Especially in all the big brand name schools.

Opportunities, well that would depend. Students who go to expensive schools also face challenges. They come in many forms. Some have advantage over others in terms of donations their families make, some belong to huge Industrial houses, some are wards of big celebrities…so these ones always get served on the platter. Others have to try harder, outshine in academics, display leadership skills, win accolades at inter school comepetitions… just to participate and then to lead the clubs. So the grass always looks greener…

As far as Internships go, at the High School level, the big names do no matter so much. That is because as a school student one does not possess much skills or knowledge to participate or add to an office environment. All one can do is data collection, surveys and stuff…

But as a student you can do much more to show your skills and sensitive nature. This could then become a great topic for your essays and ECs. An example would be to pick one or two kids from your school or community and become mentors to them. Set a target …could be an improvement in grades say 10% jump in one year, teach a skill, could be computers or a musical instrument or arts and craft, enable them to “how to prepare for a
Quiz”, Debates, MUN research and public speaking skills…

The point I am trying to make is look at life and think what you can do with what you have. That is the only way you can make it better. At schools these days all student have some sort of struggle to go through. And wait till you get to college. That is a different world altogether. Especially if you are preparing to go out. I am not trying to be preachy or anything. But I have given this advise to my child all the time.

I also do think so @mak1702. Certainly rich kids have connections and they get internships at tech firms at Bangalore etc.

Honestly, you can get into a top college without an internship of any sort. Internships are not the norm. And I’m sure many companies love for someone to do work form at not cost. I see no point in arguing about the advantages that wealthier students have over the others.

Agree with you BestofTheBest and Tubacaflaca…so what should applicants have on their commonapp?

HopeToStanford: Colleges want to get to know who your are through your application. Apart from stellar grades and tests scores, they like to see that you’ve challenged yourself. Students tend to do certain things to make their apps look better, but that’s not how it works. For instance, many students spend hours doing community service to make their applications stronger, but if that’s not where your passion lies, don’t do it. The first step if to figure out your passion and explore that passion to the best of your ability. It may be more than just one passion, and you could even combine many of your genuine interests to produce something that is uniquely yours. It may be in the form of a website, service, poems, books , applications, research, art. Anything. But genuine interest is the man in factor here and conveying that passion and perseverance through your essays would be really effective. I hope this makes sense to you.

I have stick with 2 activites for more than 8 years but it is not related to my major. What should I do?

I would think that is good. Because it Offers you a chance to show yourself in addition to academics. There is more to you, your personalty…8 years show your consistency, dedication, sincerity, diligence, passion… And that is a good thing.

But these are not related to my major , That is gonna be Computer Science.
Btw my EC’s are -
Dramas (8 years)
GK Club President (4 years , Founded , also a successfull page on facebook , won many quizzes)
House Prefect ( 2 years as well as Class President)
Know JAVA , C++ , Python and MYSQL and Visual Basic.
Swimming club (4 years for Recreation)
Cricket for Recreation.

Is that good or will I be rejected?
