Will submitting an art portfolio help my application at Colgate?

Colgate University is currently my number one. I am a senior. Short story, I have a 3.79 weighted gpa, 27 act. Taking act again in October. I am president of student council and art club. Also immensely involved at school. I also take mostly ap and honors courses. I know Colgate is a reach for me.

I have taken Art for all four years of my high school career. Although I am not Van Gogh, I have talent. Colgate allows individuals to submit portfolios of work such as artwork. I want to go into politics and law, so it doesn’t pertain to my major. However, I do love art. I wanted to know if submitting a portfolio of my 5 best pieces would help my application or if it’s just a waste of time since I won’t be an art major?

I can’t answer your portfolio question, but colleges certainly like people with strange combinations of interests, e.g. the football player who loves pottery. So you certainly want to find a way to mention it, but I’m not sure the portfolio is going to add anything as a non-art major.

Colgate explicitly states on the “Portfolio Submissions Guidelines for Applicants” page that “submitting material” does not require a commitment to major in art.

So if you are very good, and if your high school art teacher is enthusiastic with your work and is willing to write a strong recommendation, submit the supplement.
