Will you buy an electric or hybrid car next?

Of course, it will also depend on climate, type of driving, etc. but a high quality synthetic oil will not expire in one year. It’s not the old dinosaur type oil.

I don’t drive as much as I used to, so my absolute drop dead deadline is 2 years. :grinning:

But stick with manufacturer recommendations. :+1:

Figured the article about the Tesla death would get posted . That happened 2 years ago and the employee was driving a beta version of the software, and had a blood alcohol level almost 3X the legal limit. Sounds like Darwinism.

This is exactly what I did.

I usually buy my vehicles and could have. The first Kia EV9’s are made in Korea and not eligible for the consumer tax credit (they are switching production to Georgia in a few months and then are expected to be eligible. But even if they were eligible, I wouldn’t quality based on the income exemption. However, by leasing instead, I got a full $,7500 credit past onto me from Kia at time of purchase – despite not being eligible as an individual, and with no need to wait for taxes to benefit.

I did the math on the interest I’ll pay on the lease versus the savings, plus the interest I’ll make on deferring paying for the residual value and I come out well ahead leasing.

correction: the drunk passenger claimed that the drunk driver was using auto-steer when the car went off the road. Article said Tesla has no computer record to confirm/deny since the Tesla mothership “did not receive data over-the-air for this incident.”

Hmm… the WaPo article says the advanced driver assistance system (I am surmising they mean the beta self driving software) was engaged.

nope, third paragraph:

“Rossiter, who survived the crash, told emergency responders that von Ohain was using an “auto-drive feature on the Tesla” that “just ran straight off the road,” according to a 911 dispatch recording obtained by The Washington Post. In a recent interview, Rossiter said he believes that von Ohain was using Full Self-Driving, which if true …”

Note the if… other than the drunk passenger claiming it, there is no way to know if FSD was being used or not.

And buried in the bottom of the article: “Rossiter, who was found to have a similar blood alcohol level…”

Interesting. The lead in to the the article says “Evidence suggests the advanced driver-assistance system was engaged during a fatal crash that killed recruiter Hans von Ohain in 2022”. Wonder what the “evidence “ is? The wife says he almost always used the feature when driving, but can’t find a lawyer to take the case because he was drunk as a skunk.

It is unclear if he was using “enhanced” self driving (that’s what I have but never use) or the beta of full self driving, if either. Regardless, besides the fact that he shouldn’t drive drunk, the should always have his hands on the wheel and able to take primary control of the vehicle.

Ok, back to topic.

Yes please, back to the topic of buying an electric or hybrid. Thank you!

Do your due diligence. I wouldn’t buy a Nissan Leav either.

For my daily driver it’s zero oil changes since 2017

That’s cool. But I can change my oil in about 30 minutes. 30 minutes every 1-2 years with no waiting ever for charging anywhere is quite pleasant for me.

And it’s actually my zen time, just like the gym.

It would be interesting to compare all time spent at charging stations and maintenance for an EV vs all time at gas stations and maintenance for an ICE vehicle.

It would vary by car and individual, of course, but I would guess if I added it up for myself it’s probably less time overall for our EV vs our other cars over the years.

When the product life cycle of the EV matures more and the car manufacturers actually design and build something that’s aesthetically pleasing to me, then I’m there.

I’m an admitted car snob, and at this juncture of my life, I’m not going to buy and drive transportation just because I’ll save the Earth or some minimal amount of my time on this planet, if any.

I’m presently not persuaded by any product offerings. And I use my bicycle as much as possible.

I’m sure you’re aware but others might not be so I’ll say it here.

No manufacturer that I know of recommends leaving engine oil in a car for longer than one year regardless of the mileage driven Contaminants that get in the oil break it down over time so it’s best to at least do a yearly oil change.

Yes, of course, a manufacturer recommends at least yearly oil and filter changes. That’s for warranty purposes.

As I’m sure you know, synthetic oil doesn’t break down as quickly as Dino oil.

And I’m sure that you’re also aware of this service, but you can have you oil tested for about $30. Blackstone is one of these services. And I’ve tested a few cars of mine both past and present and there was no degradation of the synthetic oil after 1 year.

Thanks for confirming the manufacturer recommendation.

Are we still talking about buying EVs or hybrids here?

Only as it relates to keeping your warranty. Otherwise, post-warranty, likely a waste of money.

Maintaining my warranty on a vehicle, whether it be an ICE, hybrid or electric, is important to me. Glad to let others know of this requirement.
