William & Mary Class of 2028 Official Thread

I’d encourage anyone admitted to attend Day for Admitted Students. We had such a great day, and my son committed right after.

Can you explain what happens at Day for Admitted Students? Is it better than the Gold & Green Day? If so, why?

If your acceptance just says acceptance into the class of 2028 (without specifying fall or spring), does that mean the fall? I wasn’t sure since last year a lot of people were saying that they were admitted for spring. Also, does anyone know when financial letters come out?

Yes, you have a fall admit. I think the FAFSA will be holding up some aid packages. DFAS is much more involved. There are tours, lectures, lunch. A full day.

Is the waitlist option for spring admission really guaranteed? Seems like too many people on the waitlist to guarantee that.

Yes. Most won’t take that option so there is plenty of space in the spring.

DS accepted. OOS. 1400 SAT, 3.86 UW/ 4.2W, 2 varsity sports, lots of ECs. He’s thrilled but it’s out of my price range without an aid package. Hopefully we’ll hear soon if there’s any aid. If not, he has other great choices.

We are researching the Verto in Spain. Just what we need is a completely unexplored option!

Right!? :woman_facepalming:t3:

OOS Waitlist - 1490 SAT, handful of APs, good grades and legacy.

Has 7 strong acceptances in Northeast - a bit disappointed as so few schools have applied engineering.

DD waitlisted and interested in spring pathway. London vs. Florence is the current convo. Happy to have this option. Congrats to all with whatever you consider to be good news… for us this counts!

S24 was deferred from ED1 OOS. Now, he’s thrilled to be waitlisted! I thought he was happy with his other great admissions, and would pivot to one of those. But he joined the waitlist right away. When he read about the spring pathway, he started grinning, and ever since, he’s been super animated, hugging me, and singing(!). For my low-key S, this is exuberant. I guess W&M is really his first choice❤️.

I’m a bit worried about how they get the numbers right. Aren’t spring admits from abroad (rather than community college) a new thing? What if Verto can’t accommodate all the students who want London, for example? Or W&M can’t accommodate all the guaranteed transfers?

S24 loves the idea of a semester abroad at the beginning of college rather than in the middle, when it pulls you away from your friends, ECs and club team…He’s on cloud nine, so I’m worried that there will be another deferral of some sort in the pathways process.

The numbers of people who choose the Spring Pathway are small, but growing. This year, I think there were around 100 kids who came in that way. It’s enough to be a good size cohort for friends but small enough to be manageable. The downside is that they are given a room where there is space, so there is a chance that they may not be rooming with a fellow freshman in the spring. Some will see this is an upside - their roommate will have more advice and the dorm will likely be nicer! Sororities and fraternities do spring rush and clubs welcome people who join in the spring, so your kid can get involved without waiting.

Does anyone know whether spring pathways kids have a chance to choose their roommate? S24 knows kids on campus through D21, and he could also meet a fellow spring pathways kid he wants to room with.

If not, I wonder whether they do roommate questionnaire matching at all. I don’t love the idea of a totally random roommate, although S24 would likely embrace it.

I feel like we did two years of careful research about so many different options. We did eight college visits, and we knew so much about fit and details, and now S24 wants an option we know so little about! Along with the pile of questions I have, I’m so grateful that he was given the option😄.

Spring students are placed by space available. The chance of having an open room for two would be very slim. If by some chance there was an open spot in a friends room, I suppose that could be requested.

I’m kind of surprised as well. Also, I am not sure how much legacy plays a role - but I thought that it was considered at least for this cycle. I think it will no longer be a factor for next year though.

S24 is a legacy also. I think they have already stopped considering it. The culture has already changed. Once the law goes into effect, I think legacies will need to be stronger than the average admit so that schools can prove they were given no preference. Any consideration of legacy or relation to donors will be illegal and the school could be sued.

This is what WM states as their policy on legacies. “William & Mary does not currently have a separate admission process or standard for legacy applicants, and our data confirms that the academic profile of admitted legacy applicants is very high and consistent with our overall admitted class.”

I don’t think they’ll need to be stronger. I think they’ll do what colleges have done with race, which is make any questions that could show legacy status be invisible to the reader.
