William & Mary Class of 2028 Official Thread

There is definitely a registration when you get there. And they give some swag and stuff. I think it would be pretty awkward to not be registered. Sure you could walk around and stuff but I do think it is for admitted students (not WL). Just my .02.

Yes, I would think it would be awkward, too. Wouldn’t be able to sign in or get lunch. Could sit and listen to the presentations and go to the club fair I guess.

I agree - my daughter is trying to gently tell her friend the downsides of trying to attend DFAS without registration. But the friend is determined to go. I’m even thinking that the kids who got admitted and didn’t register might have issues - but to not be admitted and not registered may be a little strange. On a completely different note, are siblings allowed to attend?

Do you recall what kind of swag that gave out?

There were families there. My son’s roommate’s sister came.

I think I remember a t shirt, a pennant, stickers. They had some nice snacks at the end.

I am WL but doing Spring pathway, they told me nope. Cannot attend admitted student events as I am considered a transfer student.

I went to the virtual for verto. They do not take FAFSA as they are international program and FAFSA is just for US schools. You can pay it with loans, cash or 529. They have limited grants but only for Pell-eligible and it limits where you can go.

No, and I emailed and they told me no you can’t attend.

Hi all, my D is a junior at W&M and has not once regretted her decision. She came to W&M from OOS as a somewhat shy small-town girl and has grown so much in confidence! She is active in several organizations and added a second major this year. She has had some fantastic and encouraging professor/mentors. I’m already feeling nostalgic for W&M as she turns her sights to future plans.

I am so sorry that her little freshman dorm (Willis) was demolished, as it was perfect for her for easing into college life. Most of her classes were nearby on the ancient part of campus and the tight-knit friend group she met there are still among her closest friends. At 49 students it was more of a house than a dorm!

As far as roommate selection, I encouraged her to be a bit adventurous and go random. She wasn’t comfortable with that (too many unknowns for her, just going to college at all) and she joined one of the social media self-matching groups. It was stressful for her to put herself out there like that, and she had one almost-match not happen when she got up the nerve to ask a girl she had been texting for weeks…the girl had just matched with someone else (they still became friends) and two more fell through when they chose other schools in the end! She didn’t give up though, and she is STILL with that freshman roommate (they continued in a dorm sophmore year and now share an apartment with two others). So there can be happy roommate endings through Instagram (I was skeptical) when they focus on real compatibility issues in the matching process.

As far for the housing issue, D and her roommate got terrible lottery numbers for sophmore dorm selection and were lucky to get the LAST basement dorm room on campus that year (they did get a small window so it wasn’t so bad). Having gone through that scare though, they didn’t want to take a chance when they learned about all the future demolitions and signed a lease early sophmore year for a four-bedroom in the Midtown apartments on Montecello Ave for their junior year. They will keep it next year too. Though it’s a bit of a pain in bad weather to walk or ride a bike to classes from there, she has been happy in the apartment. It’s honestly very nice…I wouldn’t have dreamed of that degree of luxury in college…each room has its own bathroom, there’s laundry in each apartment, the living room/kitchen is spacious, with a balcony overlooking the heated lit pool, there a built-in gym. She now eats most of her meals in the apartment and is finally learning to cook (likes to send me screenshots of her most impressive creations). A Food Lion/numerous little eateries/pharmacy/Med-express, Goodwill and a discount household goods/clothing store are just steps away. It’s right on a bus route that goes to numerous shopping centers and, if one is up for a longish walk, it’s possible to get to the nearest of the shopping centers. Her boyfriend has a car so that helps getting to other grocery stores, etc, but it would be possible to manage even without the rides.

Hope that helps somewhat. I’m excited for your children! My D is a campus tour guide and I’d like to think she helped some of your kids have a good feeling about the school.

Willis wasn’t demolished! Willis is what was once Taliaferro and is very much still there (but I believe on the chopping block for in the future).

I have a '23 and a '27. DFAS for '23 was what sealed the deal for that kiddo. It was AWESOME. '27 was an ED so DFAS was just icing on the cake. But the BEST was that '23 was standing there waving a pom pom when '27 rolled up to the Kaplan Arena. This momma cried.

As far as swag, I am struggling to remember '23 but my '27 (ie last year) was a (cheap) tote, tons of stickers, a tee shirt, and they are VERY into their buttons.

Oh wow - I didn’t realize that a later admit would be considered a transfer student?

Do you know if Cabell is still there? That’s where I lived when I was senior at W&M many decades ago. It was an the only on campus apartment and I was able to get it because my lottery number was really good (I had like 3 or something crazy like that).

Do you recall what the parking situation was like at the Kaplan Arena? Is everything walkable to the various events? Even though I went to school there, I for real do not remember Kaplan Arena (but again, it was many, many decades ago).

Still there in Randolph Complex. On the chopping block soon though.

Oh gosh - in that case, I am definitely going to take a photo of it during DFAS!

You can park at Kaplan or other places around campus. Last year they had shuttle buses that went around during DFAS. You can walk everywhere, too.

It’s still standing but it’s been abandoned for at least the last 3 years due to mold. I think they realized it would be cheaper to tear it down than try to fumigate it all.

The Yates construction site workers are using it as a break area currently so I guess it still lives on in a sense. Definitely take photos, it won’t be here for long!

Good to know it’s still there (for now)! Haven’t been to Williamsburg since last August and I assumed it was no more.
