Winter 2013 Transfer Thread

When does UMich’s spring semester begin?

@d4wnzz - You can register for the exam here: [Chinese Placement Exam Registration: Home](<a href=“Office of Budget and Planning”>Office of Budget and Planning). The only remaining exam to place into a class is this Wednesday (the 28th) from 3-5 at U-M. In order to achieve “proficiency”, you need to go through ASIANLAN 101, 102, 201, and 202. When you register, you need to tell them which class you want to try and place into. My high school used the textbooks that are used in 101 and 102, so I’m going to try to place into 201. I’m really out of practice, so we’ll see how that goes. lol. Anyway, best of luck to you, and I hope to see you there!

:) thankkkss!!

Hey guys I think we really should meet before the semester begins! How about we try to gather together during some day’s orientation?

I got credit for college alebgra. Why do I have to test again?

@Dreamingowl Yeah xD
What day are most going to orientation though?

Hello! I am currently attending Western Michigan University and have almost completed my first semester of freshman year! I absolutely HATE where I am and I have always had the dream of attending UofM-AA. I am going into pre-medicine and Michigan has so much more to give to me than WMU. There are outstanding researching and volunteering opportunities, and they also have better overall medical groups as well.

I never applied to UofM out of high school because I knew I would not have been admitted, but because I finished my last two years of high school very strongly, I am curious as to know what my chances are!

HS GPA: 3.292 (weighted)
Junior year I received a 3.72 one semester and a 4.057 the second. Senior year I received a 4.11 one semester and a 4.0 second semester. I went from having a 2.3 to have a 3.3, which is such a dramatic increase, and I really hope they see that!

ACT: 23. Blah. I retook it 3 times and only got a 23. I think that is what is really holding me down now.

College GPA: 3.5 (currently! hoping to end with 3.6-3.7)
I am taking
Intermediate Spanish, Applied Calculus, Molecular & Cellular Biology and Direct Encounter with the Arts.

What are my chances? Is it worth applying? This is my dream school, and I am so unhappy where I am now! I truly feel I will be unhappy wherever I go if it is not UofM! :(

Thanks for the help!!! Truly appreciate it!

BTW, I am wanting to transfer in for Fall 2013! I hear that it is very difficult to get in as a sophomore transfer, but if I write outstanding essays? :frowning: Very stressed.

Sorry. Haven’t been on here lately. I was told that I had to take the math placement test and the language placement test online (which I already did.) I’m not looking to take a language other than spanish. Also, even though I tested out of algebra at Pitt, I have not yet taken a math class in college, so I’m guessing that’s why I had to take the placement test.

@lulu32…I got in as a sophomore transfer, so it’s definitely possible! It’s hard to predict what your outcome will be, because umich is pretty random with its selections. Stay positive!

@UOfpitt do I have to take the math placement test even if I did calc in college??

@lulu u would be good with a 3.6ish 3.7

@d4wnzz…probably not!

I am considering about attending orientations on either Dec 17 or 18th, or maybe I would just stay at there in two days! How about you guys?

im doing 17th! :)

It will be the 14th or 17th for me. Are most CC people going the 17th?

Planning on doing 17th here

I’m going the 17th

@UofPitt and d4wnzz,
out of curiosity, what were your HS stats?
do you think you would have been able to get in as a freshman out of high school?

i worry that since they will only see my first semester grades (16 credits), they will focus highly on my HS transcript and ACT score, which will be very unfortunate if that is the case. my ACT score could possibly ruin all of my chances. i think that they would definitely see that i had a large increase with my grades at the end of HS, but idk. i am so worried because I am miserable at WMU and I just want to get out! UofM is perfect for me and I know I would succeed there. I just hope they would see that, as well!

@lulu, mine wasnt that great. All i know is Mich looks heavily on ur credits and GPA. I would advise u not to apply even if u have a 4.0 GPA for ur 16 credits unless ur ACT and HS GPA are really stellar. If not, dont rush, just apply as a junior transfer. Albo made an excel sheet on the first page, u should take a look.

@lulu32…I went to high school in Michigan. I received a 30 on my ACT and graduated with a 3.9 GPA. I did a ton of EC, but I did not get into U of M as a freshman.

Michigan is very unpredictable. I was sure I would get in when I applied in high school, but clearly I was wrong.

They will look at your first semester grades. However, they will also see that you have improved (and they like to see that). Your ACT score is still pretty important, since you’re still a freshman, but I know plenty of people who have gotten into U of M with scores in the low 20’s.

Don’t get discouraged. If you do not get accepted the first time you apply, try again. Write good essays and focus on what you can control (i.e., this semester’s grades). Your hard work will pay off.

@UofPitt, I seriously do not see how it is possible for me to get in if you didn’t get in with your high HS gpa and ACT score. My HS gpa was a 3.3 (weighted) 3.1 unweighted, and I don’t even have a stellar gpa currently (about 3.5). I don’t want to not apply, because I will obviously never know if I am denied or not if I don’t, but still. :frowning: and my ACT score was a 23! Should i retake it maybe? I don’t know what to do!

I just don’t understand how you didn’t get in at first! The only ECs I had were a few volunteer hours as a leader for some incoming freshman, working a carnival at a childrens daycare, and I did cheerleading for two years, and choir for four. That isn’t much at all. I wasn’t in any clubs or in NHS. I am sure I can write pretty good essays, and I am sure they will see my grade trend, and how I did very well my last two years, but if they denied you…idek. Did you apply late or anything? Or were your essays not very good? I don’t get it!
