What a horrible horrible looooong movie. Oscar nomination? Really.

I know, ridiculous. Way too long, they could have cut at least an hour of porn out of it. Should have been rated X, and I should have walked out after the first scene!

I have to give it credit, though, that it was interesting in learning about how they scammed people. It would have been decent and short enough if they’d just cut the porn. Can’t believe Hollywood would honor such a movie so highly, but I guess it shouldn’t surprise me that they loved it.

I loved it.

H and I made an effort this year to see all the movies nominated for Best Picture. I thought Leonard DiCaprio was pretty good as the major scammer in this film, but Bradley Cooper was even better. Not sure why Amy Adams got the nomination for best actress. I don’t see Wolf winning for Best Movie. Stealing the thread a bit–what are everyone’s predictions for the Oscars. Here are mine:

Best Movie: Twelve Years a Slave
Best Actor: Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyer’s Club)
Best Actress: Cate Blanchette (Blue Jasmine)
Best Supporting Actor: Jared Letho (Dallas Buyer’s Club)
Best Supporting Actress: June Squibb (Nebraska)

ha-ha-ha. My 80 yr. old parents saw it and warned me about it. They HATED it. I think it was the first time I heard them use the word, “sex”.

Scorcese is the patriarch of American cinema. He can do whatever he wants.

It was more graphic than most softcore porn, which is generally illegal for a minor to view. The film was rated R, so 17 y/o are allowed to watch it. I found that interesting. Besides that, the movie was excellent. I thought the eroticism was necessary to capture the lifestyle of Dicaprio’s character. Without it, he’s a rich druggy who scams people. The incessant graphic content conveys the overwhelming presence of materialistic desire in his life.

I saw a roundtable discussion with the filmmakers of the top films this year. There was a conscious decision to make Wolf of Wall Street as long and as graphically uncomfortable as possible (and they did that, for sure, I’m no prude, but even “I” was unnerved at some of it!). The decision was literally intended to make us (the viewer) as uncomfortable watching as the “players” were delighted with what they were doing. They WERE over the top. They WERE out of control. They didn’t give a $#!+ about any one or any thing except what was in it for THEM. This was a true story, and hardly embellished for the screen. Knowing what the filmmakers’ intent was I have to say I think they succeeded.

And for the record, I think Jonah Hill will nab the Oscar this year (again), he is brilliant in this film. I also thought Leonardo DiCaprio may finally have his due as well. I have 4 more films on the Best Picture list to see, Nebraska, Philomina, American Hustle and Her. So far I really liked Dallas Buyers Club and Captain Phillips the most. 12 Years a Slave was great, but I just didn’t think the “film” (not to be confused with the actors who I think should win the awards) was “Best Picture”.

Seemed like “The Casino of Wall Street” to me. Kept waiting to hear Joe Pesci do some of the voice over.

Omg I went with my college aged daughter and I was totally uncomfortable! Clearly the movie ratings have become lax. What used to be X is now R. There was way too much gratuitous sex!

I went with my 3 college age kids and I was slightly uncomfortable with the soft porn. I too could not believe it was only and R. I believe Midnight Cowboy was released in 1969 as an X and I guess it would be a PG today when compared to Wolf.

My wife and I went with my 25 year old daughter and her boyfriend - talk about uncomfortable! But I did love the movie and the acting was great.

To me, this film – which I liked a lot – perfectly fits the R rating.

Maybe the “R” rating is slapped so readily onto mild-ish movies that include just one or two tough scenes, precisely to earn the R rating to increase attendance by adults. So now we’ve come to think that “R” movies are tame, with just a scene or two that makes some wince or look away for a moment.

Now here comes along Wolf, a movie that constantly hits all the chords in that definition. So it seems to some that it’s too much for “R.” But… it’s not an NC-17 ("no child under 17 allowed in theater’), not even close. If I had a 16-y.o. who wanted to see a Scorcese film, and I was willing to engage and talk about it afterwards - what the whole movie meant, not just the wild scenes - I’d want them to be able to see it, with a parent of course.

I watched it, and I wasn’t enamoured by it. Not because of the sex scenes, but just because the story could definitely have been made at least half an hour shorter.

I didn’t mind the R-rated scenes, but I found the movie really boring.

Great movie. Di Caprio was amazing

“Great movie. Di Caprio was amazing”

He is very talented. Nobody can act out a scene of snorting cocaine out of a woman’s rear end like Leonardo Di Caprio. What a class act.

Saw the movie with my girls ranged 6 through 16. They weren’t phased at all by the sex scene but found the cursing over the top. At the end, the movie was boring to them. I loved it!

Now, I want to see it.
;)

The movie was great! Nobody could play the role of Jordan Belfort any better than Leo. He was amazing. I thought I would pee my pants when he was at the club and the drugs kicked in and he tried to crawl down the stairs to get to his car.

The only part I thought was offensive was when one of the brokers said if you are lazy work at McDonalds. I have been to McDonalds on many occasions and some of the hardest working people work there.

I have to see this, now.

Wait. It’s three hours?
Sorry- do not sit that long.
:(
