Women's March On Washington 2017

@harvestmoon1, S2 (Russian major) says the words and declensions on the hat were wrong.
He also has a couple ushankas he bought when doing his study abroad.

I am going to work “Counting Down” into my poster in some way or other!

D1 and her partner are attending the DC March. She asked me if I wanted to go. They are leaving very early Sat. morning from NYC. Going would be very exciting, but I live 3+ hours from NYC and I need to work that Friday. And I would need to be back at work on Monday. Although doable, it would be tough for this old lady. And H wouldn’t go. Having him to travel with would make it easier.

Sometimes I’m sad that I am no longer so spontaneous and flexible.

I went in 2000 with my D and Sister-in-law. It was a good experience. Sorry I’m not making it down this time.

FYI there is a ton of march-themed clothing on cafepress.

I like this one, personally: http://www.cafepress.com/mf/108395012/womans-place-in-revolution_tshirt?productId=2030682259

Cafe Press has lots of cool things. Not to derail the thread, but I got this long-sleeved T for H for his birthday next weekend:

What I liked about Cafe Press is that it allowed me to choose a color and style of short-sleeve/long-sleeve/hoodie/different fits, etc. Glad to see they’ve stepped up the game for the march.

You can pretty easily design your own shirt on Cafe Press and other sites, and make it available to others if you like. I did that to commemorate a trip and used a photo of H and just arranged the fonts and all using their design tool. It was easy!

You all will see many interesting signs at the marches. Shirts will be harder to see if it’s cold out. Take lots of photos and share info about the best and funniest ones here!

To be honest, I do not look forward to the (likely) cold , being in a big crowd, the ride on Metro, probably having to use a port-a-potty, etc. But I am putting my discomfort aside as this is too important for me to miss.

I’m with you, Fallgirl, but we can do this and will be glad we did.

Just some logistics - Metro can be great, but for the Colbert/Stuart event they had not pre-paid for extra Metro service and so the trains were running on a regular schedule. You couldn’t get on unless you started at a terminal station! We ended up driving in and found a miracle spot behind Union Station somewhere.

Speaking of Union Station - do they still have a food court? If so, that might be a good place to escape to and warm up and get something to eat. Some places on the Mall close on the weekends because it’s mostly tourists down there and they usually eat at the Smithsonian. Those food places will be open, and bathrooms too, but there will be lines for security checkpoints getting in and probably bathroom lines. I would try a more off-the-beaten path Smithsonian, like the Freer or the Sackler to try to avoid crowds. Food at the American Indian museum is wonderful though!

When I was in D.C. with techson17 in April 2016, there was a food court at Union Station. We were staying at a hotel in Maryland and we stopped every night at the food court, picked up what we wanted and rode the Metro back to our hotel, where we ate dinner. It saved us a lot of money and we didn’t have to eat the same things.

By the way, for anyone who is interested, Union Station has a baggage check service. We didn’t realize it when we arrived, so I sat at the Air and Space Museum surrounded by luggage while son went around exploring. On our last day, we checked our luggage and explored the city unencumbered, then picked our stuff up before going on the bus.

Lines for Stewart/Colbert were two hours long if you didn’t have a ticket in advance.

There are a number of food places at Union Station. Most of the stuff near the start point for the march is only open on weekdays since it’s mostly gov’t offices in that area.

There used to be a bunch of fast food options at the Old Post Office Building – which of course is now the new Trump hotel.

Our sign making event was postponed to next Saturday due to the weather yesterday. That gives me one more week to think up something particularly meaningful to me.

I have a friend heading for D.C., but someone enlighten me about what the march is for. We have a prez that is pro-choice, he’s for paid family leave, he’s for equal pay for equal work…about all that is left is if he’s going to roll back obama’s executive orders concerning Title IX plus the timing of the march seems to coincide with inauguration. Is it about something else? I’ve been trying to read-up on what the March is for and find it alittle confusing. It seems worthwhile if the concept is unity and moving forward, I like that - as I had grown weary of the fear mongering during the election cycle but I’m really not grasping what the underlying rationale is. Sounds like quite a few of you are going - so what is the takeaway message or is it really as simple as a reprise of “I am woman, hear me roar” from 1971 and high school and college?

I think discussing that is inevitably going to lead to political discussion. I am sure there are places you can find answers to your questions, but I would hope not to lose this useful thread to dissent, argument, or condescension.

I agree, motherofthreeboys, the answers to your questions are readily available online. Let’s not close this thread.

As for the men and women on CC who want to, but can’t go to a march – no worries. There is a groundswell of activism, and you can make your voice heard in oh, so many other ways. Ideally, this is just the beginning.

I’m going for sure to DC, mother-henning a group of teenaged girls.

I’m still trying to figure out what to do with my wheelchair. The knitting idea was really cool but not doable in the next two weeks since I can’t knit and my knitting friends don’t live by me anymore :stuck_out_tongue:

Plus, my wheelchair is a foldable transportable one so that adds another layer of difficulty. Oh well, I’ll figure it out

Now I just have to hope the weather and my health hold out. fingers crossed

The San Francisco March is now at 3 pm for the rally, 5 pm for the march itself. I believe the police wanted to move up the time for safety, but I don’t know the details.

I’ve knitted two pussyhats already, and have a third on the needles. In one of them, I knitted NASTY WOMAN in colorwork. Anyone is free to think that a wool hat on a cold winter day is frivolous, but I like the idea of pops of color in the crowd. That’s why I’m sending hats to Washington to represent me.

I’m probably going to march in San Francisco. I was going to San Jose, but now I think I want to make a big march bigger. My husband will be going with me, and I’m urging my male friends to go too. It’s not just for girls!

Please don’t try to derail this thread into something political (my second request now). There’s lots of great logistical bullet points here - for me, just finding out that the SF rally and march have changed times is big. We need this kind of information that might be more cumbersome to locate somewhere else.

Believe me i’ve looked on the “internet”, really nothing there…aah too bad its still about the election, I was kind of hoping it was about something tangible I could get behind.
