Women's March On Washington 2017

I stand corrected as another poster sent me info on the amount donated to the march. It’s larger than what I saw only. However, I still think it has less to do with fundraising than organizing. No one has solicited me for a donation nor have I seen mentions of donating in all the info on the march that I’ve read.

Interesting tidbit from the Wash. Post: “Far more buses have applied to secure parking through the city for the Women’s March on Washington than for the inauguration itself.”

“My BIL and family are going to DC not for the march but the inauguration. UGH. But they want ds2, a DC college student, to drive them around on the 21st. Is it going to be a nightmare to get them around to see the sights? They’re renting a car, but I fear it will be a mess and not the best day to see the Mall, etc. Any tips?”

Driving will be nigh on impossible maybe. If they must…find out if the mall bus/trolley looper is running that day as usual. Then take Metro down there and do that. I’m sorry I don’t know the name of it. Someone posted a great interactive map with info on closed streets earlier in this thread.

If somebody is planning to do sightseeing in a car on the 21st, I would suggest that they look at sights that aren’t in downtown DC–like maybe the Iwo Jima Memorial, Arlington Cemetary, etc. Driving downtown, especially near the monuments and museums, is likely to be very difficult.>>>>>>>

Might be a perfect day to go out to Mount Vernon. Wonderful, beautiful, interesting place.

Here at U of M, the history, women’s studies, and american culture depts are now organizing ways to get out to Lansing. One of my courses has 12 people and about 10 different departments. I announced this march and now I think it’s rippling through their departments.

I can’t do much but I can spread the word. I’ll take it

(I really miss the days of actively organizing and participating in protests and fundraising. I just don’t have the time nor energy anymore :frowning: )

It’s the Circulator Bus. http://www.dccirculator.com/

The march is basically starting in front of the Voice of America offices. How appropriate!

@doschicos According to a Facebook post by organizers, donations to the March are going towards covering expenses like renting porta-potties, hiring security, and sound and stage equipment. I imagine the costs to hold something like this can add up fast.

My daughter and her friends are excited to be going to the march in Saint Paul, MN.

Here is the info for anyone nearby.

Good luck to all those woman who are choosing to attend.

It’s not just for girls, MassDaD68. You can go too.

There are sister marches everywhere. Looks like there will be a big sister march in London, and marches in other European cities as well. Plus Ottawa and Toronto.

My daughter will be marching in Copenhagen.

H and I just discussed going to our local event, although we usually try to avoid crowds. (We waited too long and bus tickets from our area to DC seem to be sold out.)

I went to our local office supplies store today and the poster boards were pretty much all sold out except for a few hideous colors and black.

I don’t know if it’s because people were getting them for protest signs, but that’s what I’m going with

@SuburbMom, you’re totally right. It’ll cost $4,000 just to rent the minimum number of porta potties for the Denver march. Organizers here think the total cost of the march will be along the lines of $20,000+

“the poster boards were pretty much all sold out except for a few hideous colors and black.”

Black is kind of fitting, no? I’m definitely in mourning.

@doschicos I agree except that it seems like you’d have to resort to paint or something if you wanted your message seen.

We need to go to another store to get posters. I just wasn’t up for it today.

Now that I think about it though, maybe I should dress up like it’s a funeral. All black and a black veil… works for me.

Something we hadn’t thought about was handicapped parking for me. I guess if nothing else, we’ll drop me plus someone else off and the other people with me will go find parking.

So I posted a note on the SF march FB page, asking if anyone would be willing to help me with logistics, etc. A couple of people responded with yes, but one person said there is going to be a gathering at Grace Cathedral prior to activities, so I went to their website and read what information they had, and just emailed the contact person for the cathedral. Hopefully I will hear from someone this weekend so I can kind of start planning stuff. It seems the cathedral is about a mile from where we’ll be staying (Holiday Inn Fisherman’s Wharf), but I have no idea how far the cathedral is from where the march starts, and how far it is (and HOW many big hills) from where the march ends back to the hotel - is this all stuff I can do via foot, or will I need some combination of transportation, and if so, what and where. I’m feeling a little overwhelmed trying to manage the logistics. I really, really hope the weather cooperates, which to me means minimal rain (I will have rain gear with me for stuff we’re doing earlier in the week, but don’t want to spend hours upon hours outside in the rain with no relief - that’s why I like the assembling at the cathedral - at least I know I’ll be inside while we’re congregating)
