Back to the discussion of celebrations, Richarlison #21 of Brazil just scored on a PK in the Copa America Final and took his shirt off after scoring, waving it while running around the field. Will it make world wide news? No. He quietly received his yellow card and the game went on.
Either we’re sexist or soccer fans don’t like Americans. Or both. Viva la celebracion! ?
The USMNT is holding their own at the end of the first half. 0-0. I feel if the US can get to Mexico’s left side I think they can break through. Altidore probably should have scored once in the first half but just missed.
I watched the Copa and there was way too much flopping, it was terrible so I turned it off. I then watched US v Mexico and thought it was a really good match. The US could have won if they would have finished their shots. Mexico pressed really well though.
While I did enjoy watching a few of the women’s matches, I definitely enjoy the men’s games more. They are much faster and more physical and you know they can score from distance and when they do not constantly flop it is very exciting.
I enjoy men’s games more, but definitely not the usmnt! It is almost painful to watch them. Bradley passing to the opposing team. So many balls put in the air and then possession is lost. Such terrible first touches. I stopped watching after the first half.
I really don’t watch soccer at all but watching the women’s team the last two games and learning about the players got me into it. I think I will follow them when they come back. The last like 10 minutes they seemed to just turn it on and attack.
Netherlands was crashing everyone into the offensive zone in a desperate attempt to score a goal. This leads to breakaway opportunities when the defense gets the ball because there are few defenders guarding behind the offense.
And we saw about 6 legitimate opportunities off of breakaways in the last 10 minutes. I was yelling at them from my couch to stop making so many extra dribbles and just shoot the darn ball.
Now that the tournament is over, I hope those of you with a NWSL team nearby make an effort to go to a game (or multiple games) this season
If we don’t grow our domestic league then I’m afraid the players will have to go overseas.
When we were in Lyon we had a taxi driver who said he was a big soccer fan, and that of course his team was Lyon, the current Champions League champs. My husband, a total soccer fanatic, knowing Liverpool won over Tottenham in the final, wondered what he was talking about until he realized the cabbie follows the women not the men!
What I didn’t realize until that conversation was that Morgan and Rapinoe both played for Lyon in the past so the Lyon games were a bit of a homecoming.
Anyone see Rapinoe’s interview with Anderson Cooper on CNN? That’s the first time I’ve heard her speak for more than a bit. She’s got the goods (in public speaking/communication). She also said she has her eye on the 2020 Olympics!
Hah! I was just about to say that I KNOW that Liverpool won the Champions League, because my S is a huge Liverpool fan, so this is great. Go Lyon! (S is also a huge women’s football fan overall.)
Many of the women competing in the World Cup, from several countries, have played for European clubs. A few on the Canadian team have played for Olympique Lyonnais Féminin. I recall that a couple of the Dutch players have also played there. Same goes for some of the U.S. teams where women on various national teams are teammates during league play. Women’s football is a rather small world.
