I have been trying to do a lot of yoga and pilates lately which, of cours,e requires a lot of bending, reaching etc. Almost all of my workout shirts ride up or droop around my chest when I am in downward facing dog :).
My pants aren’t much better. They ride down over my belly. I am tired of tugging and pulling and wondering if others can see my less than stellar tummy when I am working out.
Any suggestions for brands that have a better fit? I won’t spend the kind of money that Lulu Lemon demands.
I absolutely swear by Lucy pants. I prefer the Lotus (love the leg) or Perfect Core (love the tummy coverage/control). They hold their shape (and mine) and have a moisture wicking property. They more than pay for themselves if you add up what I paid for all the lower priced rejects in my drawer. About twice a year they go on sale.
A second for Lucy pants. I like that their running pants have three pockets, one of which zips.
I like the long very stretchy tank tops that UnderArmour sells. I wear them under a t-shirt. I recommend trying them on in person as your preferred amount of compression/tightness will vary. (I like size small, which is theoretically a 4, which I am not.)
Also, as a general comment, I find good comfortable workout clothes are indeed pricey. I like to think that by avoiding a single doctor’s visit or PT visit, I am more than paying for the clothes–and if good clothes get me out the door, that’s worth it too. (My favorite piece of winter running gear is a white cashmere sweater. It stays warm even when wet, it’s comfortable, and the white makes me more visible. It used to be a special occasion sweater, but I’m getting a lot of wear out of it now.)
I am also a Lucy fan. I don’t own any Lulu Lemom. Sometimes REI has Lucy on sale, and there’s a store not too far from me. I have some Zella leggings from Nordstrom that many here recommend, but I like my Lucy leggings much better. I think my favorites are Hatha, or something close to that.
So I checked out the Lucy site and they do have a huge sale section which is an additional 30% off. I will definitely try some. As far as the leggings, any recommendations on ones that are least likely to ride down or accentuate my “slight” muffin top?
I do yoga and Pilates on a regular basis and have found that wearing a form fitting tank top is a great way to keep it all together in downward dog.
I get workout stuff from Athleta, Prana, Lucy (mentioned above), and Zella (line of active wear at Nordstrom’s) that are quite comfortable. I also like Nike Dri Fit Training pants. These brands are slightly less expensive than Lululemon but not by much. IME cheap workout clothes dont last.
The way I am shaped (long torso), I find that all the cute yoga pants with elastic don’t work on me as they slip down under my stomach and then I’m pulling up at it when I should be up-dogging. I have better luck with Nike Dri Fit running capris which have a tie at the waist. That’s the only way that works on me to keep it up. I suspect from your description you’ve got the same issue.
EPTR, I love Lululemon and Athleta, but I have two pairs of compression capris from Old Navy that have been absolutely wonderful and have held up really well. I got them around Christmas (on super sale) and I paid $12 for them. I use them for TRX and Pilates and they are terrific. These are similar to what I have:
I teach Pilates. I love Lands end control pants. (about 60 dollars I think? less on sale) They have a really high waist that holds in my muffin top.
I also like the Lucy perfect core pant. I also like Old Navy tops -most of them are pretty long -not ones with a built in “shelf bra” I like ones without the bra -and wear my own sports bra underneath.
I second (or is it third or fourth?) the longer ribbed, fitted tanks from Under Armour, the ones with a racer back. Don’t fall in your face in down dog, and they’re long enough that you don’t have to keep tugging them down whenever you lift up your arms. They’re fitted but not too tight. I have about 8 of them…
I have pants from many different places. Some I like better than others. The old navy ones are super comfortable but are wearing out already, I have Lucy pants that are almost 10 years old and look new. I have a couple from lululemon which honestly both pairs snagged but are so soft and comfortable that I wear them sparingly. Lots of lulu lovers here so it might be the pants I picked up.
I also have a pair of Zella leggings from Nordstrom, I’m not wild about them. I find them a bit compressive for me but people love them so it might just be me. I swear I have so many pairs of leggings but reach for the same pair over and over. Right now it’s a pair of new balance winter tights and the old navy pair but like I said they aren’t going to last.
I have some pants from target, I found that if you buy the premium line there, they are pretty good. I have a couple of tanks that are GapFit that I love, they are comfortable and don’t ride up. I haven’t tried any pants but the tanks wash up well.
Now that I typed that out, I think I might have a problem. I have a bit of a tummy so I think that Lucy clothes fit my body a bit better than lululemon. I’m also busty(ier) so I like tops without a shelf bra which I personally find really uncomfortable.
Pizzagirl, I am petite in height but have a long torso for someone my height so that may be the problem. I just ordered some Old Navy compression pants. Both have a higher waist so I’m hoping that does the trick!
didn’t see any tops at Old Navy at all, though!
veruca!!! If you teach Pilates, you couldn’t possibly have a muffin top!!!
Will you guys let me ask another workout clothes section so I don’t have to start my own thread? Especially since it’s just women here responding.
I can’t tell you how many hours I’ve spent looking for front closure, racer-back sports bras. I’ve found them in black, but can’t find one in white. I really want a couple of white ones.
