My poor family in England are still awake celebrating at 4.30 am, tomorrow’s going to be a long day esp for the kiddos going to school after that.
Although Bellingham scored twice and Kane once for England, my MVP for this game is Jordan Pickford, the England goalkeeper. Without him, England could have lost.
Next up England vs Cinderella (Norway). It’ll be a good game (I hope).
Are kids still in school in England in July?
Reminds me of when the Red Sox played the Yankees in the ALCS in 2004. The games went on for hours, many ending after 1 am in Boston. I don’t think anyone went to work or school the next (or really the same) morning.
Yep, till mid-late July.
What a game last night! This British-American household is super excited about the result! My husband was just saying we should watch a replay later so we can actually take it in while knowing the outcome. I felt like watching that live took a year off our lives!!
Such an exciting game. I was rooting for Mexico, following along with a bunch of Mexican friends, who earlier in the day had banned English from our group chat so as not to “support English”. The quarterfinals will be amazing.
The one thing I didn’t like were reports that Mexico fans had been trying to set off firecrackers outside the English team’s hotel to keep them up the night before the match. But it seems the police stopped them. Is this a common tactic for rival teams??
Huge England supporters in our house. What a game! England did very well to repel the relentless Mexican onslaught. Interesting reading the post-game analysis that this was always part of England’s game plan due to the altitude. They never planned to have a lot of possession.
This happens in many sports. Fans pulling fire alarms in team hotels or other disruptions. A famous example is Michael Jordan receiving a tainted pizza at his Utah hotel the night before game 5 in the 1997 NBA finals. He became very ill, but was able to play in the game, leading his team to victory.
Apparently they do. Ecuador filed a complaint.
I got the invite to bring my wife and soccer son to the France v Morocco match on Thursday at “Boston” Stadium. I’m generally spoiled through work relationships, but this is that rare occasion that I can provide them a chance of a lifetime for free. I can’t wait!
I didn’t lose quite a year as I only made it through the red card given to England. Too stressful (partly because I don’t really understand offside; the sports I know, hockey and lacrosse have an actual line and if you are over it before the puck you are offside in hockey or if there are too many players over the line in lacrosse, you are offside).
I did watch the whole Norway game. Haaland is HUGE.
I’ve been watching soccer on and off for many years and this is the first year I have taken the trouble to truly understand the offside rule (and why it exists). Seems there are some calls for a change in how it is judged.
I tend to side with the underdog - even if it’s a minor underdog in a sense (and I think most teams against Mexico and Brazil would be underdogs, no?). The Norway win was exceptional and the England game - let’s just say, I almost never just watch something on TV (usually have iPad or a book open or doing sudoku or something lol). This one at some stage I just put everything aside, even the live text commentary that I like to follow! DH even remarked on that.
D2 happened to be in Mexico (1.5 hours south of San Diego) for the long weekend. She watched the game with friends in a bar near where they were staying and she had an amazing experience even with the Mexico loss.
Wow, I cant believe it is over, 16 years of international and domestic brilliance, the one who inspired everyone else while there was Messi and Ronaldo, thank you Neymar, thank you.
I have been really enjoying all the commentary from Thierry Henry in the magnanimous elder statesman role with Zlatan as his cynic-with-a- heart-of-gold foil. They’re great together, and Rebecca Lowe manages it all with poise.
I am glad Mexico lost. So long as their fans continue to do their homophobic goal kick chant, I will always root against them.
I totally missed this??
Should be gift link
I only skimmed the posted story as I know the controversy.
The story points out that the Mexican team have done PSAs discouraging the chant. It’s not like they’ve made placards to give the crowd as reference. The Mexican team can no more control some segment of fans and shouldn’t be held responsible any more than the Knicks should be responsible for their fans attacking Spurs fans after they lost Game 3 in NY or the Philadelphia Eagles because some ridiculous portion of their fanbase likes to riot and flip cars and such after big losses (and wins!). Every team in every country have jerks/idiots/homophobes/sexists/pick your societal segment with which most people are going to disagree.
I had a friend tell me that she wasn’t going to root for the US tonight because of the politics around the red-flag controversy. I told her to do what she wants but not to text me during the game, because I am cheering for my TEAM!
