World Cup 2026

So sad! I hate when teams just fall back on playing defense after they go ahead a goal. That NEVER works!

I think this was my favorite game of the tournament, aside from some of those fun, early upsets (wins or draws). Mainly it’s because I didn’t really care who won.

I have newfound respect for Messi, He was a team player, not a diva.

I thought the ref, a UT grad :sign_of_the_horns: , did a good job. Early yellows meant people played cleaner the rest of the game. No big controversies. And letting it go a little long in the second ET meant that he was giving England a chance, which in a way does Argentina a solid as so many people, myself included, think they get favorable treatment.

I don’t know about going defensive when England did. I don’t think it’s a crazy strategy, and it’s easy to armchair QB now. Everyone knows Argentina can score quickly and often down the stretch. They’ve proven it this World Cup. But I think because he called the team sloppy after the last game, people aren’t inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt. But, yeah, he played not to lose there, not to win.

Looking forward to the final. And the third-place match!

Hats off to Argentina.

Now, I am moving on to root for Spain.

For this World Cup, I wished for an England vs France match. I got my wish but for the third place, not the final.

Next time, I need to be more specific with my wish to a higher power!!

I hope that Argentina are appropriately punished for holding a disrespectful banner which is blatantly against FIFA’s rules.

The Falkland islanders had a vote and chose their sovereignty.

Great quote,”“It reminds me of when I was a kid, playing soccer. It’s all about love. Soccer brings a lot of love,” he said, still staring at the final score as others started cleaning up the gym.

“It don’t matter from where you are in the world, you know. It’s about bonding with another culture, other people.””

A modest proposal: the losers of the AFC and NFC Championship games have to play each other for 3rd place the day before the Super Bowl.

Can you imagine the ego explosion? :joy: :exploding_head:

All of which is to say, I feel for the French and UK players. Must be tough to play for 3rd in the WC.

Hope you do not mind a correction. It is France vs England, not France vs UK.

England and Scotland have had their own football associations before FIFA was established. Both countries were grandfathered in an individual team for each “country”.

When it comes to football, England and Scotland play under their own flags, not the Union Jack flag.

To add a complement, the UK is a country made out of 4 nations - as Ted Lasso fans would tell you :joy:

And so calling someone from Scotland, Northern Ireland, or Wales “English” is an insult :face_savoring_food:

I started by saying England then I second guessed myself and switched to UK :woman_facepalming:t4:

I should know this I used to live there :grimacing:

They also have separate cricket teams (although they are forming a unified team for the Olympics, per IOC rules), and separate rugby teams, as does Wales (but Northern Ireland players play rugby and cricket with Ireland under a unified team).

I was backing England but also wanted Mbappe to score enough to at least be in contention for the golden boot so.. pretty much ideal outcome but another Mbappe goal would have been nice

It was a fun, high scoring game. France’s defense was porous today. I am happy with the result. This is the highest ranking in the World Cup for England after its one and only championship in 1966.

I have nothing against Messi but I hope Spain’s defense won’t let him score. Mbappe could win the Golden Boot as a consolation prize.

I watched this game…the first Hal was why Engliand win. The French had a much better second half…but England was still on fire.

Both teams should be proud. Although I will say…I expected France to be in the final…so….

I really don’t get it - are they refs going to let this game go on until Argentina scores? It almost looks like it’s a fix???

I thought I would merge the World Cup thread with the cat lovers thread.

This is my cat cheering on the Spanish team in the World Cup.
