Off the top of my head, no European team lost. Iceland, Spain and Portugal drew in their 1st games.
At lunch, I’ll catch the 2nd half of the Russia-Egypt game. I’ll have to catch the Japan-Colombia match on tape tonight, sounds like a good match. No way I’m waking up for Japan-Columbia at 5 AM.
Spoke too soon. Poland just lost to Senegal.
The ref in the Poland Senegal game was awful. Allowing the substitute to come in in the middle of play totaly threw off the Poland goalie allowing an easy Senegal winning goal.
@Singersmom07 that was not a substitute. He went off the field for an injury. The ball was high in the air at the top of Senegals box at the time he was given permission to enter the field. Senegal cleared with a header and then Poland sent the long back pass, both after he entered.
Yup… Senegal won fair and square, and that last goal was a real embarrassment for Poland.
Ahh, that’s what I get for watching out of the corner of my eye while working
Wednesday’s schedule:
8AM ET Portugal v Morocco
11AM Uruguay v Saudi Arabia
2PM Iran v Spain
I predict some lopsided matches.
The referee mismanaged the Poland-Senegal injury re-entry, but not a violation of the rules. Wow, that was bad.
@doschicos the way this WC has been going so far you can’t really predict anything
True, @DodosAreDead. I’m certainly enjoying that aspect. I like rooting for underdogs.
Same here @doschicos , Japan vs Colombia was a blast. Mexico Germany even more so. I think I’d like to see Morocco or Saudi Arabia win today, though we all know that’s a very very slim possibility.
I’m going to be the dissenting view on Poland-Senegal. I have no problem at all with how things happened
The only reason it was an issue was the absolutely horrid backpass (which looked like a random kick) by the Polish player.
As a referee, you don’t allow a player to re-enter a match, when one bad pass causes a 40-50 yard one-on-one sprint to the goal. A Defender is generally slower than a Forward. Otherwise you encourage even more bad actors and flops. You’re taught as a referee to pick a “neutral time” for injury re-entry, like maybe when the Poland defense is back in position. And Senegal is attacking. But that’s just me.
My referee husband said the same thing. He said that ref probably won’t be assigned higher level games.
I got see the 2nd half of the Iran-Spain match. Spain won 1-0, but I thought Iran played tough and were very active. Iran had several good chances to score and one Iranian player nutmeg’ed a Spanish player, which was fun to watch. VAR (Video Assistant Referee) was used to disallow an Iranian goal due to Iran being offsides.
Yes, Iran sure played with heart and energy. It should have been more lopsided than it was.
The Argentine goalie… ~X(
Croatia is just killing Argentina 3-0. Argentina will need help to advance to the Round of 16.
That was a bonehead 6th grade-like mistake, but Argentina didn’t score at all. And Messi did almost nothing. Croatia is a force to be reckoned with in the Round of 16. I’m not sure that Argentina squad can beat Nigeria.
