Bad sportsmanship to exit the field the way Argentina did. In contrast, when Mexico beat Germany, the Germans were very gracious and clapped for them.
It is hard for me to blame Messi for the the losses. One man doesn’t make a team.

Cheered for Croatia since my grandmother hailed from that part of then-Yugoslavia. Great game! They outplayed Argentina and their jerseys are awesome. My son is in a pool for charity and he has Croatia winning that group. Looks like a strong possibility!

I didn’t get to see the game. What happened? They didn’t shake hands after?
@Nrdsb4 I’m not sure if it was the whole team but the Argentine coach immediately walked into the tunnel after the whistle rebuffing the other coach and Messi left the field before shaking hands as well. Not sure if other players followed their lead as well.
I rooting for Iceland in that grouping.
Argentina were simply outplayed yesterday. The first goal was because of a careless mistake, second was Modric being a genius, and third was Argentinian defenders giving up. What a horrible day to be a Messi fan. Once again he will be blamed for the failures of a trash team. But Messi and Aguero should’ve done more. Didn’t really feel like they were giving their all.
I see Croatia advancing to the quarter finals. Applause worthy performance except for Mandžukić’s missed opportunity.
Go Croatia!
Just saw a really funny Geico commercial “Longest goal celebration ever” while waiting for Iceland v. Nigeria game to start.
Lol.
I love that commercial.
And I love how excited some of the kids are in the tunnel before they go on field!
I was in Europe over the summer and everyone is crazy about soccer there. Should be interesting to see how it turns out!
So I guess it’s not against sportsmanship rules for someone to take off their shirt and stand there flexing their muscles after scoring a goal? Just watched the Switzerland v Serbia game and just thought that was a bizarre way to react to scoring the winning goal. I’ve seen it happen a few times recently and it just seems weird and in the taunting variety.
Also didn’t get it when Brandy Chastain did it either.
I guess I’m just used to NFL rules against unsportsmanlike “celebrations.”
Every sport has its written and unwritten rules. Taking off your shirt in soccer usually gets a warning or potentially a yellow card for delaying the match. But it’s the World Cup, so players might have a more leeway.
It used to be against the rules to remove a jersey like that. I don’t know what the current rules state regarding it. Plus it was so late in the match.
That said, I do like Shaqiri. Such a sparkplug of a guy but great player. And I don’t mind a little bravado when it is deserved.
“I guess I’m just used to NFL rules against unsportsmanlike “celebrations.””
Yet, they do it anyway, too.
BTW, I believe just last season, the NFL relaxed the rules around end zone celebrations.
Well, I guess I can at least be thankful for shoulder pads and other equipment that spares us from the topless muscle pumping. They really would be delaying the game in the time it would take to get to a shirtless state. ![]()
I like topless muscle pumping. Just saying.
^^^^^Not me. It gets a big laugh out of me when DH does it, but probably not for the reason he thinks.
Lol.
If you flip your bat as a batter or look at someone the wrong way in baseball, you get a beanball derby, like the SF Giants and Florida Marlins had just this past week. Baseball is strict with their unwritten rules. Can you imagine a baseball player taking off their shirt? Most of them need more exercise. =))
“Can you imagine a baseball player taking off their shirt?”
It would take too long, just like the sport itself.
But that’s the beauty of baseball, there are no ties. There’s always a winner and loser. No draws.
Removing your jersey is supposed to be a yellow card. There was a game i watched sometime in the last year where a player already on a yellow, scored, removed his jersey, got his 2nd yellow and was ejected.
