Would I Be Crazy? Brown vs Northwestern vs UNC (honors college)

I finally heard back from all my schools. Right now, my top pick is Brown, but also really like Northwestern, and UNC with the honors college is a good deal financially, about 15k cheaper per year. So one question, based on my interests, would i be a better fit for northwestern or Brown? and Secondly, would i be crazy to turn down brown for UNC for the financial benefit?

•academics is very important. i hope to be premed (biology, human biology major?), and also study music, maybe even major in music
•would like a sports following at my schools, but its not major. i have heard that browns sports are… eh even though its d1, and northwestern is probably more popular but not even close to those at UNC. could be wrong in my interpretations?
•really want a good social environment at my school, partying is a plus. i dont know about UNC too much, except that the tons of instate kids could be overwhelming at first. Brown is supposed to have a great social environment. I dont know a lot about Northwestern, except that the greek scene exerts a large influence
•college setting is obviously important, i love providence & thayer street, chapel hill seemed to be the epitome of a college town. northwestern was nice, evanston was cozy but im not too familiar with chicago.
•my family can afford to pay for college regardless of where i go. the only benefit of me going to UNC would be more perks as an undergrad from my parents and i would have some of the money i saved by going to UNC to apply towards medical school or grad school.
•browns open curriculum sounds great, the quarter system at northwestern too
•i plan to do research as an undergrad if i continue to do medicine
•if you need to know any of my interests etc let me know ill post more info

i will be doing a last visit to Brown and UNC for sure, Northwestern only if i feel torn. any thoughts or advice is appreciated. thanks! (im hoping this will be my last post for my college decisions)

It really sounds like you want UNC. Especially with the possibility of med school in your future, I would take advantage of UNC’s price tag.

also, forgot to add some things:
•UNC is BIG. although the honors college will shrink it, i dont want to be overwhelmed by size. i also feel like i may miss the attention that i would get at a brown or northwestern
•i like the quirks at schools. the rock at northwestern. brown being the liberal place that it is, etc. idk if UNC has this.
•Quality of life.
(•if i decide against medical school, i want to major in international relations, but i dont think (hope) this will be an issue)

UNC quirk: One of the best college basketball programs in history?

Its one of the premier public schools in the nation, I don’t think it would be crazy at all to go to it over Brown or Northwestern. Especially for pre-med where you’d be saving money.

Agree with some of the others, it sounds like UNC has almost everything you want. The social scene is big at UNC, but so are academics. And as far as quirks, like TPL said, basketball is a huge one. Not only one of the best college basketball programs in history, but also one of the best rivalries in all of sports (UNC-Duke). Nothing beats storming Franklin Street after beating Duke, or (knock on wood) after winning a national championship.

What a misleading name, I say that as most likely a future Syracuse student hahah.

Just realized I never answered the original question, I think ur a better fit for Northwestern than Brown only because Brown really isn’t known for partying or sports while NWU is. (Even tho its D1 programs are kinda second tier, they’re still in a major conference) Academically, they’re about equally highly regarded.

Haha sorry TPL09, I was initially a Syracuse student but transferred down to UNC (my home state). Sorry for any confusion that this may have caused!

at brown it would be very easy to major in international relations and be pre-med at the same time

it would! and that is my plan if i dont major in music

at brown, you could actually major in music and international relations, AND be pre-med

that is the beauty of the open curriculum :)

For what it’s worth, the Brown student paper wrote an article basically saying how no one gives a damn about sports (and why would they? They’re terrible at everything)

do you know where i could find a copy of that article… didnt think they were THAT bad

[Winter sports: Blah freaking blah - Sports](http://media.www.browndailyherald.com/media/storage/paper472/news/2009/04/01/Sports/Winter.Sports.Blah.Freaking.Blah-3691428.shtml?refsource=collegeheadlines)

Honestly an utterly pathetic piece of journalism.

it was an april fools article… but i didnt really get the humor in it. it was awfully rough on the teams.

anyway, back to the topic. what would you all do? UNC, Brown (my biased favorite), or NW?

It wasn’t much of an April Fool’s article, because it’s accurate. Honestly, NU and UNC offer the total package in terms of education+social+sports

Brown is obviously a good school, but it’s lame in comparison.

Brown has the best med school placement of the three.

Don’t know if this matters to you, but at UNC it is an honors program, not an honors college. Big difference.

Northwestern viewbook says it premed admission rate is 84%

Save yourself the 60K and go to UNC it is a GREAT school and you can take classes at Duke

^60K is a lot of money, at least to me!
