Would your GPA drop if you're in this situation?

If you had your room’s door broken down and you live in a house where your parents can constantly watch you without giving you ANY privacy, how far would your GPA drop? Your parents are obviously very angry, never compliments you, always doubts you, and decides to constantly check up on you. Yeah, that’s why they broke down your door and bought a house that has a room where they can look at you 24/7 if they wanted simply by moving an inch of their head.

Would you really be able to do homework and study under those situations?

Lol, let’s get back to the question… How far would your GPA drop? What do you think? Those types of parents actually do exist.

Well, I think I would be really intimidated, that I would force myself to study. Maybe, in the short span there would be a immense GPA increase, not for long. In the long run, the pressure and stress will catch up with me, and I’ll break down slowly and my grades would probably drop by two points or so.

That sounds like my parents (Im Asian) They constantly checked what I did and I had to study all day…

but in the end I guess it was their way of showing care for me.

stressful! and hiding in the bathroom to cry silently…

Lemme guess you have asian parents?

lmao nil!!! i actually slept in the bathroom cuz i was so tired and they wouldn’t let me take a nap…

and yes i have asian parents

sucksssss.

sounds like AP frank

I don’t think my door was ever closed in high school. So, my GPA would’ve stayed the same lol.

That actually did happen to me sophomore/junior years of high school, but it was combined with abuse. GPA got higher since I just avoided ever going home.

I find it interesting how many asian parents like to use these sort of abusive tactics to get their children to get high grades, but parents of other races are able to make smart kids without resorting to abusive tactics and sending their kids to HYP. The end goal is the same for both sets of parents, so why do asian parents find abusive tactics so effective?

I think it’s a cultural thing for Asians. Most Asian parents were raised the way they are raising their kids. Plus, in many Asian countries, there is a focus on educational successes and failures being a FAMILY’s successes and failures, not the student’s like here in American, so Asian parents feel that they need to drive it home even further lest their children fall into evil American habits.

No, I would study harder.

Because they suck at parenting. The book “How to Make Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie points out that giving compliments and big smiles work better than intimidation, but of course not too much compliments. That other race you’re talking about goes the “glass is half full” method: let the kid see only the positive side of doing academics and that it can be fun and a happy thing. I guess Asians go the “glass is half empty:” If you fail you suck and we will hit you, kill you, etc. and even though you see other races’ parents and children being really happy while at the same time getting high GPA, you won’t because we SUCK at parenting and we LOVE to make you intimidated. (Sarcasm intended)

My door was never closed either.

Wow. I’m Asian, and I have a ton of luck, I suppose. My parents don’t even know what my grades are. Although they do periodically take my Internet access away. =P

If I were you…I would seriously study in the public library or some place far away from them. Or, (and I know this is probably impossible under the circumstances) study so hard that your grades are too high for your parents to worry about.

if that happened to me?
no, but i don’t study in my room anyway. i study in the dining room or in the kitchen cause i always have to snack when i’m studying. plus my bedroom has like a million distractions.

my parents wouldn’t do that to me anyway:

  1. they’re too lazy to keep getting up and looking over my shoulder like that lol
  2. as long as i keep my grades up, they don’t care how much i study or what i do to get there. the result is their main concern
after reading cal newport’s blog like a bunch of ccers suggested, i don’t study near as much anymore.
maybe an hour a day now, and i’m still pulling straight A’s.

maybe u should use some of his tips if you’re worried about dropping your gpa

My GPA would go way up!

And here’s why:
-If my parents were constantly watching me, I’d do nothing but study and do homework, because anything would get me in trouble. I wouldn’t even be on this site.
-Parents who keep such a close watch on their kids are bound to constantly be checking their grades, too (and with some schools, it’s possible to go online to check current grades). So I’d make sure they have nothing to yell at me about.

My parents are like that at all. They barely pay attention to what I’m doing school-wise because I get good grades. If I didn’t, they’d keep closer watch on my grades, I think. Which is why I try to get a high GPA, so they don’t have to keep a closer watch.

Not at all.

My father removed my sister’s door because she closed it too much. Her GPA continued to go up, as it had since 9th grade. Well, it stopped going up once she got senioritis.
I don’t really see why it would go down for anyone. My mother’s always around me anyway.

Oh the ignorance.
