Wow, Harry and Meghan!

Why would someone wear makeup different than what they wear day to day? Maybe because of television cameras and the very large venue (which D1 commented was probably part of the reason for the long train - easy to be swallowed up in the large space). But I can’t really figure out why someone would want to look very different than they do every day. And I also don’t think heavy makeup looks better on most people.

And why is some loose hair alongside her face offensive to people? I thought she looked natural and amazing. She is a beautiful woman with nothing to hide.

I have to say that I totally disagree with you, @epiphany , about Meghan’s hair and makeup. I though both looked natural and lovely, and moreover looked like HER, which made it that much more charming a look.

I find the idea that wedding guests are “owed” some different kind of makeup and a bombproof hairstyle rather odd, but to each his own.

I don’t think that anyone has been “trashing” the MOB. There are those who do not favor the classic look that she and many other women chose for the wedding. Tastes differ.

Oh dear, so I can’t have a slightly negative opinion of someone now without being accused of racism? I can’t prove a negative, but I find that insulting. I like and dislike all kinds of people for all kinds of reasons, none having to do with their race. I said in most threads, she’s gorgeous, what I wouldn’t give for that figure and they both seem very happy. If I’m not in love with a messy hairdo or I didn’t get a favorable opinion after seeing some interviews, it doesn’t exactly put me in company with the worst of society.

Being more specific other than “off” about the interviews might help dispel that impression.

I’m not a House of Windsor fan, but found nothing off-putting or objectionable about the wedding. I agree that Doria Ragland looked absolutely lovely, and I don’t think she could have been more elegant or appropriate for the occasion.

I understand we’re just sharing personal opinions here, though I find some puzzling. As a successful actor, Meghan Markle certainly knows how to present herself, and far more about hair and makeup than most. Her friend Jessica Mulroney, mother of two of the pageboys and one of the bridesmaids, is a professional stylist and was said to have a lot of input on planning the wedding. https://www.thecut.com/2018/05/meghan-markle-prince-harry-royal-wedding-reception.html Some here may disagree with the choices Markle made, but those choices weren’t made from ignorance, and I doubt they represented a lack of effort. Elizabeth herself opted for a natural look and hairdo on her wedding day (though there were probably people who didn’t care for it then, either). According to wikipedia, she did her own makeup: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wedding_of_Princess_Elizabeth_and_Philip_Mountbatten,_Duke_of_Edinburgh

And regarding the dress - Clare Waight Keller and the House of Givenchy probably also know a thing or two about fabric and fit, don’t they? She sure seems qualified. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clare_Waight_Keller

@intparent
It’s not about “very different” than every day. It’s about a consciously different occasion.

@Consolation
It’s not about “owing” guests anything but a certain degree of respect and gratitude for witnessing such a landmark and solemn event. That respect will emanate naturally from one’s conscious decisions about the formality of an event.

Her hair did not look natural in a good way to me, but sloppy. Ditto for the makeup
To each her own. I remain disappointed in her decisions. She looked better (hair, makeup, clothing)in her reception dress, which I thought was tasteful and careful. I liked the style of the wedding dress very much. I’m a rather intuitive person, and I actually imagined the very style of the dress she did wear (scoop neck, nothing plunging, long sleeves – i.e., simple top. The cut was wrong for her body, though. And the argument earlier that she wouldn’t have had time for last-minute alterations (if she lost weight) is ridiculous. Arrangements of any kind could and would have been made at that level of power, for heaven’s sake.

Eek. This thread is one of those things that make me desperately grateful to be just an average person. I don’t understand how people can be so mean about what someone else finds beautiful.
I wasn’t super into this whole thing like so many, but would have to be living under a rock not to have seen pictures. I think she looked beautiful and happy.

Surely there’s a happy medium between “bombproof” hair and hair that looks natural without looking a bit sloppy.

Totally Yes to Post 562. You’re right, @eyemamom . You’ll be accused of all kinds of moral and social failings for not agreeing with a crowd.

It is my guess and it’s possible Harry is not a fan of heavy handed makeup on faces. If you look at his previous girlfriends they are all pretty fresh-faced. She could have very well toned down the makeup because he prefers her that way, or because she felt it was a more natural and younger look.

I think some people wouldn’t much like her no matter what she wore, how she did her hair, or her makeup. If you are looking for reasons to insult because of an underlying dislike, you’ll find it.

MODERATOR’S NOTE: OK, let’s move on. The thread is devolving into bickering at this point. I don’t want to close it!

I liked Camilla’s pop of pink in the official photo.

It’s the dissection that gets me, lol. (Note the “lol.”)

Yes, you adjust your makeup so the photos work. But that doesn’t mean the sort of theatrical makeup that robs the moment. I liked the tendrils. In a world where so much is so tightly controlled, she was who she chose to be. It’s a new world.

There’s some irony in the usually staid monarchy accepting her/her choices and modifications…and some mostly Americans not.

Xpost. ^

I admire her willingness to advocate for others.

One benefit to going for a natural look - hair, makeup, etc. - is that I can envision it will remain more relevant, less dated as the decades roll by. Same with the dress, which is a more classical silhouette. When it comes to fashion ins and outs, even makeup and hairstyles come and go obviously.

I also always thought that early in the day festivities call for a lighter touch to makeup than evening activities.

I thought the person who could have used the most help in the appearance department was Prince Philip. I know he’s 96 and just had surgery, but he looked awful. A little bit of makeup under the eyes would have done wonders.

I came back to this thread today and wow!!!

Put me firmly in the camp that her dress was plain and boring. I’m very happy for them as Harry is my favorite, but that dress was plain and I also wasn’t feeling the messy bun.

Given every pic I’ve seen of her mom I don’t know why anyone would compare her outfit to what others wore. This is a woman with dreads, a nose piercing, and 3-4 earrings in one ear, she probably felt very dressed up and it’s an ordeal to have the fascinator comply with her dreads.

Are we talking about Doria Ragland? Why wouldn’t she feel “dressed up” - she was dressed up. We just don’t know how she felt, do we?

I’m just glad at 96, Prince Phillip was able to appear!
